Our Forest Habitats Section Supervisor,  

  • Serves as the department representative in forest practices, partners to secure fish, wildlife, and habitat conservation and enhancement outcomes.
  • Works with inter-agency forums that address forest health and management issues.
  • Coordinates and builds collaborative relationships with other state agencies, tribal and local governments, and landowners to magnify support for forest management plans, policies, and actions that conserve fish, wildlife, and habitats, particularly when those decisions involve or may lead to negotiations, appeals, or other legal proceedings.
  • Identifies the work priorities in collaboration with Section staff and others; uses the policies and priorities of the department Strategic Plan and Habitat Program Business Plan, and the principles of the Conservation Initiative.
  • Successfully delivers on the work priorities of the Section through the management of financial resources, including grants and contracts, using department budget and contract applications.
  • Provides supervision, training and technical assistance to Section employees and the regional biologists.
  • Tests and implements forest management approaches that advance fish, wildlife, and habitat conservation.
  • Reviews proposed legislation and responds to legislative assignments that would affect forest management in order to identify potential effects on the conservation of fish, wildlife, and habitats.
  • Develops both landscape and site-specific management approaches that achieve inter-program and agency goals and objectives for fish and wildlife protection and recovery having a nexus to forested habitats.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Work Setting, including hazards: 
    1. Primarily work is conducted in an office environment, also includes driving, and occasional field work, periodic travel to meetings, site visits, and workshops and forums throughout Washington State.
  • Schedule: 
    1. Typically, work schedule is Monday – Friday – 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. with some evening and weekend work possible.
  • Travel Requirements:
    1. May require traveling as much as 10%, about 2 days a month – travel to meetings, site visits, and workshops and forums throughout the State of Washington. 
  • Tools and Equipment: 
  1. Telephone, computer, smart phone, videoconferencing, and standard office equipment.
  • Customer Interactions:
  1. Responsible for contentious issue resolution and serving as a leader of major stakeholder interaction – important to have excellent personal interaction and diplomatic skills
  • Other:
  1. Providing technical direction to internal and external program and Agency professional staff involving complex or controversial studies or projects –may have policy level negotiation, interaction, and discussion with other Agencies at both the State and Federal level.
  2. Per Governor Inslee’s Proclamation 21-14 state employees must be fully vaccinated effective October 18, 2021, absent an approved medical or religious accommodation.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in natural resource science and/or planning, fisheries or wildlife management, land use, urban, regional, environmental, or natural resource planning, landscape architecture, geography, land use or environmental law, public administration with an environmental emphasis, or closely related field.

          AND 

  • Minimum four (4) years of relevant experience in natural resource science and/or planning, fisheries or wildlife management, land use, urban, regional, environmental, or natural resource planning, landscape architecture, geography, land use or environmental law, public administration with an environmental emphasis, or closely related field.

OR

  • Additional relevant professional experience may substitute year for year for the degree. 

AND 

Job knowledge and experience in:

  • Forest management techniques, laws, policies, and programs (including forest practices rules, Forest and Fish Law, habitat conservation plans associated with forest practices activities, fish passage laws, hydraulic code rules, and federal forest land planning programs) and how these affects or enable fish, wildlife, and habitat conservation.
  • Fish and wildlife biology, habitat science, and ecology that enables anticipation of fish, wildlife, and habitat needs and potential impacts.
  • Principles of staff supervision.
  • Principles of leadership, collaboration, and conflict resolution.
  • Developing and managing a budget, including various financial resources.

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • Valid Driver’s License. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • A Master’s degree in land use, urban, regional, environmental, or natural resource planning, landscape architecture, geography, land use or environmental law, public administration with an environmental emphasis, or closely related field.

AND 

  • Five (5) years of years of relevant experience in land use, urban, regional, environmental, or natural resource planning, and/or program development.

    AND 

Job knowledge and experience in: 

  • Fish and wildlife biology, habitat science, and ecology to anticipate fish, wildlife, habitat needs, and potential impacts, and recommend likely remedies.
  • Working with or for forestry proponents, stakeholders, or regulators to successfully develop and implement forest management plans and solutions that protect fish and wildlife resources while maintaining working forests.
  • Supervising and mentoring staff, including setting clear expectations and coaching staff to improve performance to maximize desired outcomes and results.
  • Developing and managing a budget, including various financial resources.
  • Building partnerships and consensus, and to facilitate cooperative activities with diverse individuals.
  • Critical thinking and analyses to interpret technical information for inclusion in or support of policies and management strategies.
