The mission of the Nisqually River Council (NRC) is to create sustainability in the Nisqually Watershed for current and future generations by developing a common culture of environmental, social, and economic balance. A program of the NRC, the Nisqually River Education Project (NREP) is a watershed education program which implements key pieces of the Nisqually Watershed Stewardship Plan, providing students service learning projects that link Washington State learning goals and standards with local environmental issues, inspiring stewardship of the Nisqually Watershed and the world. Inspiring a sense of place among youth in their watershed, and providing community-based, on the ground service learning is critical to our work. We achieve this by working with a diverse range of community partners, focusing on local school districts, teachers, students and volunteers. NREP serves over 40 teachers and more than 1,000 students each year in service learning field trips ranging from water quality monitoring, riparian habitat restoration, salmon tossing, field investigations on Puget Sound beaches, explorations of the local wildlife refuge to monitor wildlife and learn ethnobotany, volunteering at the local salmon hatchery, removing invasive species and more. The AmeriCorps member serving with NREP will foster this sense of place and empower students and adults to connect with their local environments to create positive change through hands-on, outdoor learning projects supported with in-class lessons. Interviews will begin early-mid June 2021. Position contingent on funding.

Member Duties : Our member will support our mission by delivering classroom presentations that support field experiences, which they will also staff. Nature is not just good for kids’ health; it improves their ability to learn, too. The evidence for this comes from hundreds of studies, including experimental research. When compared to peers attending regular schools, those who’d attended school outside had significantly stronger reading and writing skills as measured by standardized tests and reported feeling more excited about school because of the experience. Nature restores children’s attention and relieves children’s stress. The outdoor instruction makes students more engaged, interested, and can promote social connection. This position will generate and refine instructional materials, visit schools, maintain websites and social media platforms, staff student field experiences, assist at community events and teacher trainings.
