Description

Function:  Under general direction from the Education Program Manager, this position is responsible for planning, developing, and implementing a broad range of public education activities and programming that further LOTT’s mission and goals.

Series Concept:  The Environmental Educator is the mid-level classification in the Education Program series.  This position requires specialized knowledge to effectively assist the Education Program Manager to plan and implement educational programs, activities, and projects.

Examples of Duties

Typical duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Conducts day-to-day operations of the WET Science Center; greets WET Center visitors at the front desk; interacts with visitors of all-ages to engage visitors and facilitate learning;
  • Plays an integral role in LOTT’s school programs; develops youth educational programming as part of LOTT’s partnership with local school districts as assigned; delivers school programs and tours; provides oversight for visiting student groups; conducts evaluations for program efficacy and engagement;
  • Develops and delivers educational programs, presentations, and activities for WET Center visitors, youth groups, Saturday programs, and special events as assigned;
  • Develops and delivers virtual content, including virtual and remote field trips, modified activities for remote learning and creating video content;
  • Maintains and orders supplies and materials for the WET Science Center and education program;
  • Develops education and outreach materials for varied audiences, such as curricula, booklets, newsletters, reports, websites, promotional materials, posters and flyers, displays, advertising, and other materials as assigned;
  • Manages the WET Science Center social media presence and assists with upkeep of the WET Center website;
  • Manages the WET Science Center’s volunteer program; recruits and trains volunteers;
  • Provides WET Center reception and supports general front desk functions by greeting visitors, and answering multi-line telephone system, answering or directing queries from the public, staff, and customers;
  • Participates in the training of Environmental Education Assistants, front desk staff, security staff, and others as requested;
  • Works collaboratively with other staff and outside designers and consultants on production of exhibits, videos, website content, and other education and outreach tools and strategies as assigned;
  • Leads facility and building tours for a variety of audiences; assists with hosting of facility use, industry peer, and other groups as assigned;
  • Participates in a variety of interagency and community meetings and events as requested;
  • Assists in the development of annual goals and reports; maintains tracking spreadsheets for all educational activities;
  • Demonstrates regular and reliable attendance; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions:  The Environmental Educator generally works Tuesday through Saturday, with occasional evening work. This position may require a temporary Monday through Friday schedule and teleworking during the pandemic-related closure This position works primarily in an office setting, but is required to work in all areas of LOTT facilities. This includes traveling to remote community locations and LOTT worksites in order to meet with community partners, give presentations, and accompany tour groups. Due to the size and configuration of LOTT facilities, the ability to climb stairs and sufficient agility to safely navigate uneven terrain and slippery surfaces both indoors and outdoors is required. The Environmental Educator may be exposed to a variety of health and safety conditions including toxic, corrosive, and combustible fumes and chemicals, high voltage equipment, and raw sewage. The physical ability to carry or otherwise transport heavy boxes, displays, exhibit furnishings, and equipment is required.

Demonstrated expertise in:

  • Applying professional principles, practices, and techniques used in developing and delivering education and public outreach programs;
  • Developing relevant, engaging educational programs and activities for a variety of age groups and diverse audiences;
  • Preparing and disseminating coordinated public communication messages in a variety of formats across all platforms.

Skills:

  • Excellent writing, speaking, presentation, and general communication skills;
  • Strong organizational skills;
  • Strong classroom/group management skills;
  • Proficient with computer software, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, InDesign, Photoshop, Acrobat Professional, Adobe Cloud, and Outlook;
  • Working knowledge of publication/content development, formatting, and design;
  • Proficient with online tools to manage evaluations, surveys, social media, and electronic communications including Survey Monkey, Mail Chimp, Hootsuite, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube.

Ability to:

  • Motivate and engage audiences of all ages in learning about and supporting LOTT’s mission and services;
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines;
  • Maintain a flexible schedule to accommodate occasional off-hours work;

Additional Information

Education/Experience:  Bachelor’s Degree with major study in education, communications, natural sciences, or closely allied field. Minimum two years professional experience in education, curriculum development, public relations, and/or community outreach. Knowledge of wastewater treatment, water quality, ecology, and/or related sciences preferred. Experience providing public communications services for government agencies, utilities, and/or environmental organizations desirable.

Additional Requirements:  Must possess a valid Washington State Driver’s License within 30 days from date of hire.  Must participate in LOTT’s Health & Safety Program.
