Why It’s a Great Opportunity:
This is a fantastic entry level position where your focus will be in the field conducting Level A and Level B Assessments of Pierce County culverts as part the implementation of a department wide culvert replacement program. Data collected will be used to help planners coordinate activities with other plans and programs to ensure goals and objectives for fish passage and flooding are met. You may also assist in the development of a GIS database for tracking culvert inventories, work with private landowners and other stakeholders and collect other data in the field as required.

We are hiring two extra hire employees for up to six months to work outdoors and in the field.
Consideration will be given to those at a variety of experience levels including those with a related degree and experience in WDFW Fish Passage Inventory Level A and B assessments and/or general survey work.

Your Future in this Role:
This is a great opportunity to get some hands-on experience for a future role with Pierce County. You will partner with four biologists who will help train and support you as you learn your new role. After assessments are complete, you may have exposure to levee setbacks restoration projects, water quality projects, and wetland delineations.

Core Daily Responsibilities
Complete Level A and Level B fish-passage inventories analyses (assessments) in accordance with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife Fish Passage Inventory, Assessment, and Prioritization Manual.
Coordinate with other Environmental Biologists and Planners to plan and conduct field work.
Utilize fish-passage databases, GIS software and other sources from various state agencies to make fish-passage barrier determinations and aid prioritization efforts.
Summarize and analyze data, write reports and memos and create effective work products to communicate the results of inventory analyzes
Communicate and work with right-of-way agents, planners, landowners, Tribes, special interest groups and other stakeholders.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Requirements
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in botany, biology, environmental studies, fisheries, soil science, wildlife biology or related field
Two years of related work experience OR several internships or classes with survey work in wetland delineations, line transects. Fisheries experience is desired but not required. Most work can be taught with science degree and some experience.
Consideration will also be given to a variety of experience levels including those with a related degree and experience in WDFW Fish Passage Inventory Level A and B assessments and/or general survey work. GIS experience and certificate a plus!
Additional education or related experience may substitute for the recruiting requirements.
Valid driver’s license.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Duties require 8-10 hour days (40 hours) with extensive field work, sometimes in remote locations and during inclement weather conditions. Work location will be at or near aquatic environments, often adjacent to roadways.

Capable of walking over rough terrain for short distances. The ability to carry up to 40 lbs. over uneven terrain, and frequent bending, stooping, and climbing in and out of stream and water areas required.
