Love animals? Want to make a positive impact on the planet? Come join Woodland Park Zoo as an Empathy Network Specialist! There is one regular, full-time, benefited opening available. 

This position will facilitate the Advancing Conservation through Empathy for Wildlife (ACE) Network in building the capacity of all network partners to implement and share effective practices that foster empathy and compassion for animals and people.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and implement a plan for catalyzing and supporting a self-sustaining learning network in alignment with current strategic priorities.
  • Support all staff, consultants, and network participants in building network values, alignment, committees, and necessary skills.
  • Coordinate and facilitate meetings, webinars, and learning opportunities using a variety of engagement tools for the network that will be conducted by internal and external presenters.
  • Design and implement engagement and mentorship ladders, providing a spectrum of opportunities for network participants to get involved in network activities.
  • Facilitate network meetings, including developing agendas, facilitating inclusive participation, building consensus, resolving conflicts, capturing notes and assigning follow-up tasks.
  • Research content and write articles, blog posts, fliers, publications, grant narrative information, communications/interpretive materials and other promotional and support materials and oversee similar staff efforts.
  • Provide support for network activities, including webinars, online meetings, in-person meetings, communication, and content sharing infrastructure, etc.
  • Plan for network summit and other virtual/in-person events that support community building and forwarding the work of the network.
  • Work with the evaluation teams to facilitate project and program assessments.
  • Work closely with Empathy Initiatives team members to coordinate communications, strategic learning framework, and sharing forums.
  • Promote effective empathy practices with zoo staff and volunteers.
  • Under direction of Manager(s), Director and/or Vice President and with the assistance of the Development Department, write grant applications and grant reports, participate in donor cultivation tours, events and other fundraising initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.S. or B.A.) from an accredited college or university in related field and two
  • (2) or more year’s related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Highly organized, efficient, solutions and detail oriented with excellent administrative and time management skills.
  • Two (2) or more years’ experience with empathy-based education objectives, social-emotional learning objectives, and/or other education experience related to increasing empathy for animals.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, ability to lead and motivate teams, bring in and support different perspectives, and to work with diverse populations and a variety of stakeholders (partners, network committee members, staff, donors, board members, volunteers and visitors, etc.).
  • Familiarity or experience with WordPress and moderating online communities.
  • Excellent project management skills that include attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to prioritize effectively.
  • Ability to prioritize workload and schedules in a fast-paced environment with multiple agendas. Open to experimentation, learning, and adjustments along the way; ability to push through ambiguity to deliver results.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team setting, as well as represent the department in cross departmental meetings to reach cross functional goals and the zoo’s mission.
  • Proficient and experienced in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and comfortably with audiences of different backgrounds and experiences.
  • Comfortable with change, innovation, and creative approaches to collaboration and evaluation. • Ability to work a flexible schedule, which may include weekends, evenings, and holidays.

PREFERRED SKILLS

Experience facilitating networks or communities of practice.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position may be required to lift up to 35 lbs. Reasonable accommodations may be made to perform essential functions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to a typical office environment and/or outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. While under COVID-19 restrictions this position may work mostly remote. When travel restrictions are lifted, job may include travel to the partner sites in WA, AK, ID, ND, MN, WI, and MT.
