Mid-Columbia Fisheries Enhancement Group (MCF) is looking for a passionate individual to fill the position of Education, Outreach, and Monitoring Assistant, through the Washington Conservation Corps (WCC) Individual Placement program

This position is ideal for an outgoing, organized, detail-oriented and independently motivated person with experience working with the public and a passion for the outdoors and environmental education. The Education, Outreach, and Monitoring Assistant will have a variety of responsibilities during the 11-month service term with Mid-Columbia Fisheries Enhancement Group. Project responsibilities will include coordinating volunteer work parties to improve fish habitat, attending community outreach events, assisting with in-class and field based educational experiences for K-12 students, assisting with the creation educational materials and resources, clerical and logistical support, and working alongside MCF staff and seasonal technicians to assist with a variety of field work which may include but is not limited to: monitoring the success of restoration projects, restoration and stewardship activities, and bull trout recovery.

Mid-Columbia Fisheries Enhancement Group is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting and restoring wild salmonid populations and their habitats through restoration, protection, education, and community involvement throughout our region. Mid-Columbia Fisheries is part of a statewide network of Regional Fisheries Enhancement Groups working to restore and protect fish populations and habitat. Mid-Columbia Fisheries is a non-profit (501c3) organization governed by a volunteer board of directors. We sponsor and implement priority restoration, fish passage, and habitat protection projects throughout our region. We provide educational and community outreach programs that promote the long-term commitment our society needs to protect fisheries resources. Mid-Columbia Fisheries works throughout south-central Washington with communities along tributaries to the Columbia River, including the Yakima River, the Klickitat River, the White Salmon River, and the Wind River.

This is an 11-month AmeriCorps position starting on October 1st, 2024

 

 

Position Responsibilities

  • Education and Outreach– Assist with & occasionally lead outreach and education events to teach people of all ages about native salmonids and their habitat. Education and Outreach activities include K-12 field trips, classroom lessons, salmon dissections, and other public events for community members of all ages. Page 1 of 3
  • Adopt-a-Stream coordination– Recruit new groups and coordinate with existing groups to conduct semi-annual stream clean-ups.
  • Volunteer management– Organize and host volunteer work events. Duties consist of recruiting community volunteers, site preparation and clean up before/after events, coordinating logistics and supplies, ensuring volunteer safety, and educating volunteers about the importance of their contributions.
  • Monitoring and Stewardship– Duties may include working with MCF staff to plant native plants, control invasive and non-native weeds, monitor vegetation, support in-stream restoration projects, and assist with other field work as needed.
  • Office assistance– Duties include assisting other staff with a variety of office tasks, including but not limited to: data input, updating social media and web pages, and supporting day-to-day operations of Mid-Columbia Fisheries with clerical duties such as making copies, organizing supplies, conducting inventory, etc.

 

 

Required Qualifications

  • Must be18-25 years old, with exceptions for those with military service or mental or sensory disabilities.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen, U.S. National, or Lawful Permanent U.S. Resident Alien.
  • Per legislative mandate, priority will be given to Washington state residents.
  • A valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and the ability to safely drive agency vehicles.
  • Ability to pass a national service criminal history check.
  • Demonstrated experience working with and speaking to the public.
  • Experience in or passion for environmental education, ecology,, and/or fisheries conservation
  • Ability to serve outside in all types of weather and capable of repeatedly lifting 50 lbs into and out of trucks and walking 3 miles daily over steep or uneven terrain
  • Impeccably detail oriented with great organizational skills
  • Self motivated and able to independently manage a schedule and complete tasks with limited supervision Friendly, outgoing demeanor and ability to work well alone and in a team
  • Proficiency with MS and Google Suite, including Excel
  • Experience with data entry, organization, and assessment
  • A can-do attitude and willingness to be flexible and learn new skills

    Pay and Benefits

    • Educational loan forbearance from AmeriCorps on qualified loans.
    • Health insurance starting on the first day of service. WCC pays the monthly insurance premium.
    • Mental health services through the Member Assistance Program (MAP).
    • Access to the AmeriCorps Child Care Benefit Program for qualified full-time AmeriCorps State Members who need the benefit to serve.
    • Three weeks of paid, professional training in addition to day-to-day training.
    • Up to three weeks of personal time off.

     

     

    Schedule:

    Members generally serve 40 hours over four or five days each week. Occasional evening or weekend work will be required for volunteer, education, and outreach events.
