Job Purpose

The Friends of the Dillon Ranger District is seeking an Education & Youth Programs Manager to join our team. This position is responsible for the oversight and implementation of all youth programming as well as public education initiatives. This position supervises and manages a summer seasonal Education and Youth Programs Coordinator.

This position is supervised by the Program Manager.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Oversee year-round youth programs and education/interpretive activities, with a focus on a diversity of programs and projects.
  • Create and develop youth and public educational/interpretive activities during the summer season.
  • Oversee youth projects during the summer season, including setting project scope, ensuring the safety of all participants, and coordinating dates with multiple youth partners.
  • Train seasonal Education and Youth Coordinator and serve as their primary supervisor for youth summer projects and educational programs.
  • Oversee logistics of the Youth Forest Stewards program, including recruiting, planning, and facilitating the program with various Summit County partners.
  • Coordinate FDRD Educational Hike Series during the summer months and the Educational Snowshoe hikes in the winter.
  • Devise and coordinate public educational/interpretive activities throughout Summit County during the fall/winter/spring seasons. This includes but is not limited to public outreach through a monthly speaker series with guest speakers.
  • Maintain and expand the Youth Forest Stewards Program (aged 15-18) by researching and implementing new content with a focus on new recruitment
  • Create and facilitate youth environmental education programs during the fall/winter/spring seasons.
  • Ensure accurate posting of project schedules, aspects of the organization’s Facebook and Instagram pages and website including posting educational activities, youth project schedules, updating content, etc.
  • Document the accomplishments of each FDRD program and project for submission to the USFS.
  • Assist the Marketing and Events Manager with tasks associated with the retail store, social media and outreach events
  • Assist FDRD Programs Manager with trail projects and Forest Health projects on an as-needed and agreed-upon basis.
  • Assist Executive Director with grant writing and reporting in support of these programs.
  • Assist FDRD Executive Director and staff with outreach and fundraising events.
  • Work with the Executive Director, other FDRD staff, and the FDRD Board to continually evaluate and identify youth and education programmatic needs.
  • Assist other FDRD staff with office administration operations and assisting the Executive Director when needed.
  • Develop creative education initiatives for diverse groups across the Summit County community.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 2+ years experience in a leadership role with youth, preferably within the environmental/outdoor education field.
  • 4 year degree in a related field (Environmental Science, Education, Natural Resources, Non-Profit Management); relevant work experience may be substituted for all or part of the education requirement.
  • Comfortability with both working outside in variable conditions for up to 8 hours a day as well as being able to sit at a computer for multiple hours.
  • Wilderness First Aid/CPR certifications; if not certified, FDRD will assist with paying for a course within three months of employment.
  • Consistent positive attitude
  • Strong written and interpersonal skills.
  • Valid drivers license
  • Pre-employment background check will be required.

  • Passion for the outdoors
  • Experience with trail maintenance or ecological restoration.
  • Ability to prioritize effectively and handle multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Experience with expanding equity and inclusion to promote broader program access to diverse populations.
  • Experience working with volunteers ages 4 to 85.
  • Experience directly supervising a staff member
  • A motivated self-starter with energy, creativity, and a positive attitude.
  • Team player who can step into different roles when needed.
  • Ability to work independently or as a member of a team.
  • Bilingual speaker (Spanish/English)
  • Knowledge of Rocky Mountain ecology
