Mid Sound Fisheries Enhancement Group (Mid Sound), a nonprofit, has an exciting opportunity for a self-starter who’s passionate about working with communities to restore habitat and help recover local salmon populations. Mid Sound works with communities in the central Puget Sound area in both King and Kitsap Counties to restore local stream and nearshore habitat, so salmon can thrive. As our Education and Outreach Coordinator, you will build on our 30-year track record of success, and lead us forward, helping us grow the organization to better serve the needs of salmon and the vibrant communities that surround them. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
1. 2 years relevant work experience in environmental science, education, communications, landowner/partner outreach, or salmon habitat restoration;
2. Flexibility, creativity, and an eagerness to learn and grow while working on a variety of education projects;
3. Ability to collaborate with a diverse array of people including students, staff, project partners, community members, and volunteers;
4. Strong interpersonal, public, and written communication skills, with an ability to quickly build relationships whether in person, by phone, or through email correspondence;
5. Organized, self-motivated, and able to prioritize effectively to handle multiple projects and deadlines;
6. Comfortable using Google systems, Microsoft Office programs, social media, video conferencing, and graphic design platforms, or a willingness to learn; 7. Access to a personal vehicle and ability to travel within King and Kitsap counties for work (reimbursed for mileage at the current WA State rate).
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Education Program Coordination: Collaborate with other Mid Sound staff to implement and build our growing education program to engage both students and adults in habitat restoration and salmon recovery. Current funded projects over the near-term (next several years) include:
• Help implement the Green Duwamish Student Stewards program, an education program in partnership with middle school teachers in the Lower and Middle Green River watershed that engages their students in the real-world learning experience of designing and implementing riparian restoration projects on the Green River and its tributaries.
This will entail:
1. Coordinate with teachers on curriculum needs and connect them to restoration opportunities to support their curricula.
2. Provide support to youth crew cohorts learning about and developing restoration planting plans.
3. Work collaboratively with the Restoration Project Manager and Volunteer Coordinator to organize and host community work parties to implement student-developed plans.
• Help develop and implement the Green Duwamish Curriculum Design Lab in partnership with Sustainability Ambassadors, a program to train teachers and interns to develop new curricula centered on place-based learning and to lead students in implementing restoration projects.
1. Provide in-class support to middle and high school students learning about environmental, social, and technical issues related to salmon and watershed health.
2. Coordinate with local experts and practitioners to bring case studies and real-world problems to classrooms.
3. Assist Sustainability Ambassador interns in developing case study curricula for relevant environmental topics and field-based study modules.
4. Provide in-class and field support to students and teachers developing restoration project ideas in their neighborhoods and near their schools.
5. Coordinate with the Restoration Project Manager to plan and implement field work days for students to participate in salmon habitat restoration projects.
• Assist the Operations Director in coordinating the Community Action Training School, an adult education program aimed at empowering community members to make a difference in their local watersheds.
1. Help develop and refine a curriculum about scientific and social-political issues surrounding watershed health.
2. Assist with organizing speakers and facilitating weekly virtual sessions, as well as planning weekend field experiences for participants.
3. Support participants in their efforts to design and implement Stewardship Action Projects – individual or group volunteer projects on a topic of their choice.
Landowner and Community Outreach Support:
• Work collaboratively with Restoration Project Managers to meet outreach and communication goals of their projects, including:
1. Join Project Managers on site visits with landowners interested in participating in our Green Stormwater Infrastructure and Nearshore Restoration programs;
2. Assist in the development of outreach materials, including postcards, fact sheets, and website and social media content.
3. Support Project Managers in creating and delivering virtual and in-person workshops around landowner and community outreach topics.
4. Provide updates on Mid Sound’s projects and successes through social media, email blasts, local news, and other communication channels.
Organizational Outreach and Fundraising
• Help Mid Sound update and implement our organizational communication plan. Implementation may include regular social media updates, creating and updating website content, producing regular Electronic Newsletters, and other strategies that you help to identify.
• Participate in community outreach events, such as Salmon Days fairs and community events, providing salmon education content.
• Assist team of Board and staff members in creating outreach and fundraising events.
• Oversee donor communications, such as donation acknowledgements and engagement events.
Other
• Assist with identifying funding sources and writing grant applications to support Mid Sound’s future education and outreach work.
• Assist with grant, project and annual reports.
• Other duties as may be required to meet team and organizational goals.
