The Northwest Straits Commission is looking to fill an Ecosystem Project Assistant (Environmental Specialist 1) position. This is a full-time project position and includes a full state benefits package. This will work both remotely and from our Padilla Bay Office in Mount Vernon, WA. 

The Northwest Straits Commission is a governmental organization housed in the Department of Ecology’s SEA program and was established to protect and restore the unique, rich marine ecosystem of the Northwest Straits region of Puget Sound through a local-based approach. The Northwest Straits Commission provides resources, coordination and technical support to seven county-based Marine Resource Committees (MRCs) and carries out marine conservation projects throughout the Northwest Straits region.

This position will have the opportunity to build skills in collaborative conservation. These skills will be honed by working with staff, interns, volunteers, rural communities and partners on environmental projects. The individual in this position will also learn how collaborative conservation projects are developed, implemented, assessed and communicated when multiple partners are involved. These attributes are foundational elements of a successful career in the conservation arena.

Please Note: This is a project position that is funded until September 30, 2021. The Funding for this position has a high probability of being renewed for the next fiscal year.

Duties

What makes this role unique?

As an ES1 with the Northwest Straits Commission, you’ll gain a unique perspective on how environmental projects are implemented through a bottom up and multi-partner approach. You’ll become familiar with how local priorities can be connected to regional initiatives to assure a diversity of voices are incorporated into conservation action.

What you’ll do:

  • Perform field tasks such as green crab trapping and removal and other monitoring as necessary on emerging projects. This may include volunteer or partner training on field techniques.
  • Communicate and coordinate with regional partners, landowners, and Marine Resources Committees to assure common understanding of field plans and protocols (e.g. green crab trapping and removal protocols, equipment needs, access points, kelp protocols etc.).
  • Assist NWSC staff in preparing for project related meetings and workshops.
  • Work with staff and partners on environmental project planning, design, implementation, and public communications.
  • Assist staff with analyzing, evaluating and interpreting data, and entering information into databases, including organization of physical and electronic data sheets.
  • Assist NWSC staff with writing reports that summarize project outcomes and deliverables.
  • Contribute to project discussions at relevant board committee and workgroup meetings, such as the Science Advisory Committee.

Required Qualifications:

There are several ways you can qualify for this position. See options listed below:

Option 1: A Bachelor’s degree involving a major study in environmental, physical, or one of the natural sciences, environmental planning or other allied field.

Option 2: Experience at or above the Environmental Technician level or equivalent will substitute, year for year, for education. See chart below:

The  experience as an Environmental Technician can include assisting in any of the following areas: 1) Processes various types of environmental regulatory permit applications, reviews them for accuracy, completeness and compliance with code standards; researches existing permits to preclude possible conflict; plots legal descriptions and geographic locations on a map; prepares public notice as required and checks actual publication for accuracy and sufficiency; prepares field examination package; 2) Assists professional staff in field work such as sampling, testing, calibration, etc.; 3) Tracks environmental documents with computer system and evaluates, interprets and analyzes data; 4) Analyzes data within the tracking system to determine completeness, correctness and compiles reports for use by professional staff or outside agencies; 5) Collects data from field or office sources to be translated into computer for tracking; 6) Responds to general inquiries from public and other interested parties; 7) Compiles and maintains environmental informational library; 8) Assists in inspections of industrial and municipal discharges for compliance with their respective permits by collecting samples, reviewing operating procedures and standard practices being administered and verifying accuracy of measuring devices and recorders; assists in sampling design and data evaluation; 9) Leads and supervises staff in collecting data necessary to support an environmental project or reporting requirements; 10) Receives and responds to requests from the public regarding status of permit applications; explains permit application procedures; assists applicants in filling out forms; 11) Compiles data and prepares recurring reports regarding number, type and location of permit applications; sends these reports to interested agencies; 12) Collects field samples or data for environmental studies; 13) Prepares public notice to meet statutory publication requirements; prepares a field examination package including such items as maps, legal description, information or existing water rights and/or unusual problems within the area; 14) Provides advice, guidance and assistance to the public in the preparation of applications; answers questions concerning existing water rights and flood control zone permits; assigns application numbers and records them in appropriate log books; spots location of point of withdrawal or diversion on maps;

  • Ability to work with a wide variety of interests, including but not limited to ports, elected officials, businesses, environmental groups and Tribes.
  • Understanding of data analysis and interpretation.
