This position serves as the Ecologist on the Forest Salvage Team with the BLM California State Office, Division of Natural Resources in Sacramento, CA . Major duties include but are not limited to:

  • Serve as the National Salvage Implementation Team technical expert for biological surveys and management of these resources.
  • Serve as the technical expert for the protection and management of riparian areas.
  • Assist in developing restoration plans for areas disturbed by fire, invasive species, insects/disease mortality, access roads, and timber harvest projects.
  • Provide professional wildlife expertise in protection, management, and improvement of wildlife within framework of multiple-use management of forest and range lands.
  • Prepare or review biological evaluations for threatened, endangered, or sensitive species.
  • Assist other team members with field tasks such as timber marking, timber cruising, boundary marking, and GPS of boundaries.

Position requires 76% or more travel.

This position has a positive education requirement which requires that you have a degree in biology, or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences.

In addition to meeting the education requirement, you must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the below examples.

To qualify for the GS-9, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 grade level. Examples of specialized experience may include: Experience conducting plant and wildlife surveys, habitat restoration, revegetation/restoration planning, plant community/association mapping, assisting with permit preparation, and assisting with contract administration. Reviewing, researching, and analyzing biological data, issues, and information that support project recommendations. Utilizing systems such as ArcGIS and GPS field data collection systems. Assistance with wildfire restoration projects. OR 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master’s degree or master’s or equivalent graduate degree OR A combination of education and experience. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. Only graduate level education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level may be combined with experience.

To qualify for the GS-11, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-9 grade level Examples of specialized experience may include: Experience conducting plant and wildlife surveys, habitat restoration, revegetation/restoration planning, plant community/association mapping, environmental impact analysis, permit preparation, and contract administration. Reviewing, researching, and analyzing biological data, issues, and information that support project recommendations. Analyzing the effects of fire on plant communities, timber, and soil composition and assisting in the development of restoration plans. Analyzed data and recommended solutions to problems involving a limited section of wildlife resources issues, e.g., interpreting the effect and impact of changes on wildlife habitat as a result of specific resource activities. Utilizing systems such as ArcGIS and GPS field data collection systems. OR 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree OR A combination of education and experience. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. Only graduate level education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level may be combined with experience.
