Job Description:

This position is currently being offered as either a Limited Duration appointment for anyone to apply OR as a statewide Job Rotation to all permanent, current State of Oregon employees (this is includes regular status and limited duration employees who have completed trial service).  State of Oregon job rotations require employer approval. This position will be based in Prineville but may have an opportunity to work out of the Unit offices of The Dalles or John Day based on District needs.

What will you be doing

You will supervise and backfill as duty officer across all units within the district as necessary to coordinate field activities to meet fire program objectives on the district through cooperation with cooperators and local and federal agencies.  You will supervise employees engaged in field activities accomplishing prevention, pre-suppression, suppression, and ensures maintenance of equipment and facilities to support accomplishment of program objectives.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Candidates whose demonstrate skills, abilities and/or experience in the following:

  • Five years (60 months) of wildland fire suppression, emergency dispatching or equivalent experience which includes one year of leading/supervising the work of others.
    OR

  • Bachelor’s degree in forestry or closely related natural resources field and two (2) years of wildland fire suppression or emergency dispatching which includes one (1) year of leading/supervising the work of others.

  • Excellent communicator both oral and written.

  • Strong organization skills.

  • Strong experience in wildland fire suppression.

  • Experience coordinating and planning projects.

  • Strong leadership skills in wildland fire fighting.

  • Able to lead employees to success in a challenging and unique work environment.

  • Qualified Initial Attack Incident Commander (ICT4) and Task Force Leader (TFLD).

  • Ability to obtain and maintain Division/Group Supervisor (DIVS) and/or Incident Commander Type 3 (ICT3) qualifications within 3 years.

  • Demonstrated ability to foster a culture of service, workforce diversity, equity and inclusion, team environment, and strong internal communication and alignment.

  • Proven experience as an excellent communicator who is honest, fair and inclusive among employees, partners and stakeholders.
