Essential Job Duties:

The Director of Sustainability will lead the Sustainability Office and the NC State Team to further sustainability initiatives that are economically viable, environmentally sound, and socially just. This includes utilizing campus as a living laboratory and model for experiential education to equip students to meet global challenges, research and outreach that creates sustainable solutions, and implementation of initiatives that advance the University. This position has a key role in NC State’s mission and leverages teams, establishes partnerships, and implements strategic plans through collaboration, communication, and coordination.

Responsibilities:

  • Engage campus and community to create a more sustainable future within academic, student, and staff arenas.
  • Support the Sustainability Council as the main coordinator and author of sustainability planning efforts such as the Sustainability Strategic Plan and Climate Action Plan.
  • Partner with the Sustainability Council to engage the campus and surrounding community in creating and implementing plans.
  • Lead the long-term strategic direction and day-to-day activities of the Sustainability Office, including its program development, educational outreach, campus engagement, and collaborative partnerships.
  • Manage Sustainability Office programs by creating and achieving goals, adhering to budgets, setting timelines and deadlines, securing partners, generate reporting, supervising professional staff and interns, and evaluating programs.
  • Actively develop collaborative partnerships and program strategies with all levels within the University and beyond through collaboration, communication and coordination.
  • Serve as a catalyst for tracking academic and student affairs information to support and guide activities.
  • Serve as a key member of the Facilities Division and Energy Systems leadership team to help ensure facilities design, construction, operations, and energy usage support campus sustainability efforts.
  • Track, monitor and communicate sustainability progress at NC State.
  • Coordinate and facilitate multiple stakeholders toward common goals.
  • Promote the sustainability accomplishments of NC State to a wide variety of internal and external audiences. Serve as spokesperson for a wide range of sustainability issues.
  • Represent the office on a wide variety of campus and community organizations.
  • Oversee a multifaceted communications strategy that includes media relations, websites, social media, and marketing.
  • Support outreach and education efforts to further engage campus and the community in sustainability programs and practices.
  • Supervise professional staff and student interns in the Sustainability Office.

Minimum Experience/Education:

Bachelor’s degree and three years of experience in the area of assignment, of which at least one is supervisory or in a lead-worker capacity; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Required Qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge of the economic and environmental aspects of sustainability
  • Strong experience in facilitating large and diverse stakeholders
  • Strong ability to create diverse partnerships
  • Must be able to communicate effectively verbally with supervisors and the general public and understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5 years of experience in program administration, design and implementation of sustainability programs
  • Masters degree in a related field
  • Understanding of trends in higher education and sustainability
  • Knowledge of state legislation and local policy with the ability to interpret, explain and implement these guidelines to diverse audiences
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills

Required license or certification:

Valid driver’s license required. NCDL within 60 days of hire.
