The Strategy team at REI is responsible for developing the co-op’s long-term vision, key enterprise objectives and goals, and transformation strategy and plan. The Director, Strategy role is broad in scope, and high in visibility and impact, serving as a key partner, influencer, and thought leader working closely with senior leaders and teams across the entire organization. This role oversees the portion of the team focused on strategy development, which is responsible for market (customer & competitive) insights and white space analysis to identify growth opportunities, developing our enterprise long-term and annual strategic plans, partnering with leaders to develop high priority initiative and transformation strategies, and leading business and corporate development. The Director challenges our thinking, identifies key growth opportunities and threats, and ensures our strategic initiatives are grounded in solid business cases and insights.

  • Identifies and communicates key responsibilities and practices to ensure the organization promotes a successful attitude, confidence in leadership, and teamwork to achieve business results
  • Supports the implementation of company programs, procedures, methods and practices to promote REI key messages
  • Challenges and inspires employees to achieve business results
  • Ensures employees adhere to legal and operational compliance requirements
  • Oversees training and development of employees directly and indirectly managed and makes effective staffing decisions
  • Conducts and ensures the completion of performance reviews
  • Provides coaching, direction and leadership support to employees in order to achieve department, company and customer results
  • Establishes and maintains visibility within the department
  • Monitors operational statistics, reports trends, variances and issues, and takes appropriate action
  • Helps lead enterprise strategy development and planning to create REI’s 10-year vision, 3-year strategic transformation plan and economic model (in partnership with FP&A), and annual plan and priorities
  • Partners closely with senior leaders to define, progress, and bring our most critical transformational/growth initiatives to life. Leads complex analyses and supports business case development
  • Serves as a thought-leader across the co-op for macro, consumer, and market insights, synthesizing trends and identifying opportunities and risks that influence our current and future initiatives and strategic positioning. Oversees and supports deep dives on financial, customer, and market analyses across our transformational/growth initiatives
  • Oversees quantitative and qualitative analyses to provide senior leadership and key cross-divisional partners with insights about the market, industry, vendors, key competitors, and customers to be used as key inputs in strategy development across the enterprise
  • Helps lead enterprise business & corporate development including evaluating opportunities to accelerate our transformation such as white space assessments, new business models, M&A, and strategic partnerships
  • Partners on communication of enterprise strategy updates, plans and priorities to the Senior Team, Leadership Forum, and All REI
  • Partners on creating & ensuring annual alignment around key customer & business outcomes (the ‘scorecard’). Brings fidelity to our annual plan (initiatives, roadmap, accountability, etc.)

Bring your passion and expertise

  • 10+ years of progressive leadership experience, with increasing levels of responsibility, ideally within the retail, consumer, or technology sectors
  • BS or BA, preferably in a related field (business, economics, etc.)
  • MBA strongly preferred
  • Strategic, big picture, quick thinker and intellectually curious problem solver with proven experience in establishing thought leadership, vision and goals; developing strategic and annual plans
  • Demonstrated ability to partner and collaborate across organizations to create & manage against outcomes
  • Ability to lead adaptively through complex and ambiguous problems and situations
  • Ability to act as a change agent and challenge the status quo
  • Drive transformational change, sponsor change initiatives, and enable others to innovate
  • Foster a continuous improvement mindset
  • Analytical mindset and ability to synthesize complex information, connect ideas with data, and present in digestible, easy to understand format
  • Proven ability to work in a fast-paced, changing environment, and effectively manage and meet multiple, simultaneous deadlines with minimum assistance
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to build trusted relationships with all levels within and outside of the organization
  • Strong presentation skills with the ability to present to and influence diverse audiences on strategic initiatives and business opportunities
