Position Summary:
As a member of Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever’s Conservation Operations team, the Director of Government Affairs advocates for mission-oriented conservation policies that benefit upland wildlife and their habitats.
The position’s primary focus will be to highlight the multiple public benefits of grasslands, sagebrush steppe, savannas and other habitats. The Director, in coordination with current Government Affairs Directors, will be responsible for identifying existing science that supports the organization’s policy platforms and developing policy statements and communications products that highlight the importance of these landscapes to policy makers, our membership, and the public.
This position will engage with Congress on legislative proposals and the USDA and DOI for implementation and administration. Policies include, but are not limited to, Farm Bill and precision agriculture, Recovering America’s Wildlife Act, the upcoming “Grasslands Act,” and various climate initiatives. The position will work cross-functionally with the Conservation Delivery team by adapting existing programs to address local conservation needs and working to secure funding for implementation.
Responsibilities and Expectations:
- Cultivate and maintain relationships with Congressional offices and federal agencies.
- Provide expertise on the organization’s habitat programs.
- Coordinate with the Marketing team to design and implement strategic communications plans that highlight PF and QF’s policy positions.
- Conduct research and develop reports, op-eds, briefs, fact sheets, web content, and other materials to educate policy makers on the benefits of the organization’s programs and policy recommendations.
- Collaborate with external partners and internal teammates to organize events, meetings, and field days that visually demonstrate the organization’s programs.
- Build coalitions with organizations, associations, and others in the wildlife and agricultural conservation sector who share similar goals and approaches to conservation practices.
- Support Conservation Delivery team with state-level policy.
- Work with members of the Conservation Operations and Development teams to support fundraising for the organization’s programs.
Preferred qualifications
- include experience in policy areas of agriculture, wildlife, climate, sustainability, public lands, and appropriations.
- Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Natural Resources Conservation, or related field and at least 3 years’ experience in Government Affairs in a Natural Resources related field are required.
