UW Medical Center’s Environmental Services Department has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time, DIRECTOR OF ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES. The Director is responsible for planning and directing all activities of the department, including policy and procedure development, strategic planning, budget planning and control, customer service excellence, and staff training and development. This position holds primary responsibility for the clean appearance of the facility and has a key role in providing a safe environment for patient care. The EVS Director oversees the operation of Environmental Services, Waste Management and Linen Services for both the Montlake and the Northwest campuses.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Program Administration/ Management
- Manage and administer all operational aspects to provide quality environmental care for UWMC.
- Develops and maintains policies and procedures for the department, and as appropriate, for the hospital-wide administrative policy manual.
- Budget planning and control. Responsible for the oversight, monitoring, and analysis of operating and capital budgets for the dept.
- Develops an effective quality assurance program for both core operations and the patient care centers utilizing CQI or Lean methodologies.
Strategic Planning
- Performs critical thinking affecting the department’s and medical center’s business mission, key success factors and strategic direction.
- Considers the department’s operating environment, strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to identify strategic imperatives; suggest ways to improve alignment with them.
- Works proactively to identify potential areas of concern and takes corrective action to prevent harm or injury.
Service Excellence
- Completes quality assurance reviews and reports monthly findings to supervisor. Documents corrective action taken for all findings that do not meet expectations.
- Acknowledges and responds to requests for service or information.
- Monitors and maintains department activities within regulatory requirements.
- Issues of concern are promptly corrected.
- Works collaboratively with other departments and hospital staff to anticipate needs, correct problems, and communicate important information. Participates as a team player and considers the facility wide needs, as well as specific EVS dept. needs.
- Trains department staff on service excellence standards and goals.
- Establishes rounding in all patient care areas.
Human Resource Management
- Hire staff, establish job performance standards, evaluate job performance, and take corrective action if performance is not acceptable.
- Responsible for training, assigning, and scheduling work, and acting on leave requests.
- Resolve grievances or complaints. Maintains knowledge of union contracts and follows appropriate protocols.
- Assures compliance for all dept staff for annual education, flu shots, TB testing, respirator fit testing, hazardous waste training, etc.
Other Duties
- Coordinates the development and preparation of special projects.
Responds to urgent needs promptly. - Other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s degree in business, healthcare administration. or a related field preferred
- At least five years of experience in healthcare environmental services as a director or senior manager in a large facility required.
- Strong computer skills required

- Demonstrates effective and appropriate direction to EVS department consistent with UWMC and departmental vision, mission, and values.
- Demonstrates knowledge and practice of efficient, customer-focused operations.
- Demonstrates technical competencies, knowledge, and ability to conceptualize, plan, and implement new technologies, programs, and services in EVS.
- Demonstrates ability to effectively establish positive working relationship with other UWMC and UW campus departments. Effectively participates in establishing quality interdisciplinary practices and policies and procedures with these departments.
- Demonstrates professional and effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrates effective and appropriate critical thinking skills and decision-making abilities consistent with UWMC mission, vision, and values.
- Demonstrates excellence in operational utilization of and management of assigned staff for the EVS department.
- Demonstrates that adequate numbers of staff are recruited to UWMC and appropriately screened and trained prior to working in their job placement.
- Demonstrates that appropriate actions are taken when it is discovered that a dept. staff member has breached a patient’s confidentiality.
- Demonstrates that appropriate policies are followed when projects are designed.
