Mission / Organization:
The Wetland Conservancy’s (TWC) mission is to partner with communities across our state in conserving, enhancing, and restoring the physical and ecological values of Oregon’s greatest wetlands for current and future generations. Our boots are in Oregon’s wetlands. Founded in 1981, The Wetlands Conservancy is dedicated to working in partnership with community members, public and private sector partners, and regional tribes. Our nationally recognized work includes stewardship of 32 preserves and over 1,500 acres of Oregon wetlands, valued at $11 million. With Oregon’s future looking drier, hotter, and more populous, wetlands conservation is more urgent than ever. Wetlands are critical to everything Oregonian: rain, fog, beavers, salmon, our natural heritage and agricultural abundance. They are important for carbon sequestration, sufficient clean water, healthy fish and wildlife populations, and human enjoyment. And yet they remain misunderstood. As a result, wetlands are overlooked at best and threatened at worst. Wetlands need someone to protect them, to speak up for their interests, and to activate people across the region to learn about, love, and take care of their wetlands. That someone is The Wetlands Conservancy.

Reports to Executive Director

The Wetlands Conservancy recognizes the exclusion and displacement of people that is intricately woven into American history and its conservation movement. Land ownership and the power it consolidates furthers racial and social inequities. TWC recognizes that conservation must support healthy communities and that resilient ecosystems are only possible when they include people of all identities. TWC sees racism and disparities based on race, gender, class, sexual orientation and other identities. Those most affected by wetland degradation are those most marginalized and disenfranchised in our communities.

TWC’s mission embraces values and practices that aim to represent all people and treat them with respect. TWC strives to bring communities together to find common goals in protecting wetlands. TWC wants to ensure clean water for people & wildlife, recognizing wetland benefits such as mitigating floods, lessening rampant wildfire and counteracting climate change.

We choose to openly engage in an on-going process of active learning and growth, understanding that this work requires a sustained commitment. When we make mistakes along the way, we will do our best to learn and listen with respect and humility. With this statement we are asking our community and each other to hold us accountable for this important and difficult work.
