Database Specialist (Part-time)

Provide data management solutions for large- and small-scale fisheries projects. Determine the needs of clients and end-users and design the database architecture and user-friendly applications required by them. Primary duties will be to build and maintain databases as well as custom applications. That said, a flexible candidate who could potentially support Blue Leaf in other capacities beyond database management would be a notable plus. This could include but is not limited; fisheries field work, data collection, data analysis, reporting, and/or proposal writing.

Database Manager/Programmer Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design, create and maintain Microsoft SQL and other databases. Ensure data are secure and organized.
  • Research, design, develop, test, analyze, deploy, maintain, and support user-friendly custom software applications, including existing applications that were created in Microsoft Access with back ends in Access and Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Migrate current solutions over time to more current or appropriate technologies including Azure hosted databases and other cloud front-end, reporting and analysis tools.
  • Using modern tools and/or Microsoft Access, create forms that run processes, queries, pass-through queries to SQL Server stored procedures, and reports.
  • Develop data import, export, and update processes.
  • Create SQL stored procedures and custom algorithms for assessing fisheries behavioral and survival questions.
  • Combine, clean, and convert historical fisheries data from multiple file types and formats into new multi-year databases that can be easily queried.
  • Create cloud-based and/or Mobile Apps for field data collection.
  • Meet with clients (staff and external consulting clients) regarding their database and application needs.
  • Write specifications for software projects, and write and implement efficient code.
  • Develop data QA/QC processes.
  • Create user-friendly documentation for databases and software applications.
  • Train end users and resolve user problems and questions.
  • Contribute to proposals by writing the data management section.

Knowledge and Experience

  • Database design, implementation and management.
  • Track record of successful hands-on experience designing, developing, testing, and deploying custom software applications.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, VBA, SQL, and Microsoft SQL Server. Experience with R is a plus.
  • Experience with cloud database technologies like Azure and modern analysis tools like Power BI preferred.
  • Knowledgeable of multiple programming languages and ability to learn new technologies quickly as required.
  • Good written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills. Attention to detail is a must.
  • Excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Experience with database and programming work in a scientific setting is a plus.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field and 2+ years’ experience, or Associate degree and 4 years related experience.
