Who we are:

The Cooperative Programs for the Advancement of Earth System Science (CPAESS) serves the Earth system science community in three distinct areas of service. We partner with federal agencies and businesses to hire critical scientific staff enabling a more robust workforce. Through our scientific programs we seek to edify new research with our postdoctoral programs, our visiting scientist and internship programs, along with our interagency support programs. We also help build the Earth system science community by convening and managing summer schools and institutes, conferences, and advisory committees.

What You Will Do:

This position will assist the U.S. Carbon Cycle Science Program Office Director in fulfilling the mission of the U.S. Carbon Cycle Science Program and the Carbon Cycle Interagency Working Group (CCIWG). Our mission is to coordinate and facilitate federally funded carbon cycle research, and provide leadership to the U.S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP) on carbon cycle science priorities. This hiring activity also aims to inclusively promote the training of the next generation in interagency carbon cycle science research program facilitation and coordination, data analysis, management and science-policy disciplines, exposing students to opportunities unique to our interdisciplinary science and interagency programmatic needs and goals, as reflected in the 2020 DEI statement of the North American Carbon Program, which is a community-driven component of the U.S. Carbon Cycle Science Program. As the longest standing USGCRP interagency group and program since 1998/1999, we also aim to support the Global Change Research Act (1990) mandate to assist the Nation and the world to understand, assess, predict, and respond to human-induced and natural processes of global change.

This position will be fully remote.

Responsibilities:

To assist U.S. Carbon Cycle Science Program Office Director with duties and responsibilities of the Program Office to fulfill the Program mission, including, but not limited to the following tasks as needed, not exceeding 40 hours per 4-week work cycle:

  • Assist with regular and ad-hoc programmatic needs such logistics for organizing interagency and community meetings, workshops and public engagement activities via virtual platforms and in-person meetings (post-pandemic), facilitating discussions, notes/record-keeping/summarizing and implementing action items, and tracking of progress towards action items and programmatic goals; collection, sharing and discussion of relevant carbon cycle science publications and policy news etc. and help with developing relevant summaries, blurbs or blog pieces for internal and external purposes such as for the periodic newsletter for the program (The Carbon Digest); helping with any pre- and post- conference or workshop public engagement and preparation activities, provide assistance with special projects such assessments/reports/papers and data calls.

Specific ad-hoc responsibilities (interchangeable and collaborative with other team members, depending on student interest and availability during the required time for completion of specific projects or activities):

  • Assist with data entry, special projects such as internal/public survey development and analysis, stakeholder analysis, literature reviews, data presentations and graphics development, data visualization etc.
  • Assist with the development, editing, QA/QC, management of data calls, surveys, web and social media content, tools and database(s) (e.g. interagency CO2 removal or CDR compendium) hosted by the U.S. Carbon Cycle Science Program for data/information quality, assurance, usability and accessibility.
  • Support Director in liaison activities such as coordinating, communicating and facilitating U.S. Carbon Cycle Science Program Office efforts across multiple stakeholders, incl. CCIWG, USGCRP interagency working groups and Federal agencies incl. for activities linking carbon cycle science and interagency efforts informing decisions and reporting on legislation.
  • Provide ad-hoc support by responding to the needs for periodic web content management, database development, report/publications editing, meeting/workshop facilitation coordination, and analytics. Provides support with office correspondences, mailings etc.

DECISION MAKING&PROBLEM SOLVING – i.e., types of problems that are solved independently

  • Works under close supervision of the Program Office Director. Will be expected to solve routine problems collaboratively.

What You Will Need:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

REQUIRED

  • Upper level (3rd/4th year) Bachelor’s student or lower-level Masters or Ph.D. (1st/2nd year) student in relevant natural/physical/social sciences or engineering, science communication, data science, science-policy, management disciplines.
  • Must be enrolled (or intend to enroll in the next regular session) for credit in an accredited secondary or post-secondary school, college, or in a trade school that has received a Certificate or Approval from the Colorado State Board for Community Colleges and Occupational Education.
  • Must have access to and use personal computing devices.

DESIRED

  • At least one year of relevant professional or volunteer experience.
  • Preference to students from Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) and/or from populations traditionally under-represented in interagency/federal carbon cycle science.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

  • High level of attention to detail.
  • Moderate to advanced knowledge of data visualization applications, Excel and different data management, analysis and presentation tools, digital content development and web management tools, and virtual meeting platforms.
  • Moderate to advanced level of knowledge and skill in program area (carbon, climate change).
  • Skill in organizing and prioritizing tasks and assignments.
  • Clear and honest oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be available for 2 hours at least one Friday and one Monday every month to assist with interagency meetings.
