Salary– $39,528.00 – $51,432.00 Annually

Our Creel Survey Lead Biologist, 

  • Under the supervision of the senior biologist, ensures that study data collected adhere to study design and the highest standards of scientific integrity. 
  • Participates in sampling and field data collection.
  • Schedules and directs non-permanent Scientific Technician 2 field staff.
  • Coordinates creel data management tasks including data entry and data quality control procedures and ensures they are accomplished on schedule; assists the database manager.
  • Performs routine audits of data to ensure data accuracy and corrects errors.
  • Prepares data summaries, data tables, charts, and figures for reports.    
  • Updates the WDFW website that provides weekly updates of fishing success based on creel numbers.  
  • Edits and formats reports for annual publications for the Agency and DJ Reports.
  • Provides accurate data to the lead biologist for updating annual forecasting and harvest management models.
  • Participates in creel surveys by interviewing anglers, performing effort counts, collecting biological samples, and daily summaries
  • Coordinates with Agency, Tribal and other government biologists and the public for data collection or sharing.
  • Schedules and assigns tasks on daily, weekly and monthly basis depending on project deadlines and environmental factors.
  • Reviews Total Time reported by field staff
  • Updates lead biologist weekly on progress and personnel issues
  • Arranges time for field staff to take online LMS training classes.

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

  • Work Setting, including hazards:   
    1. Fieldwork occurs outdoors, in inclement weather, requires the ability to hike short distances, drive to creel locations, hike or boat long distances of stream over slippery or uneven terrain, sit, squat, and walk for long periods of time, lift forty (40) lbs. or more, use knives for sampling fish carcasses. Work may include working in conditions of low light and possible encounters with dangerous wildlife or stinging vegetation. Work may include snorkeling in cold, fast-flowing/whitewater conditions may be required. 
    2. Surveys conducted by helicopter and jet sled may be required. 
  • Schedule:   
    1. Generally, work is forty (40) hours per week, however extra hours may be needed to meet agency goals. Weekend and three weekdays per week are required. 
    2. Flexible hourly and daily schedule is necessary to perform the assigned tasks, to include early mornings. Holidays may be required. 
  • Travel Requirements: 
    1. Considerable driving is required via state, federal, and county roads, as well as local travel on private logging roads. 
  • Tools and Equipment: 
    1. Desk, filing cabinet, computer, printer, telephone, fax machine, copy machine, state vehicle, wading shoes or hip boots, rain gear sampling gear, notebooks, and vests.
  • Customer Interactions:
    1. Interacts with private landowners and the public. May occasionally deal with conflict when delivering agency information. 

 

 

Qualifications

 

Note: Closely related qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-by-year basis. 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, or environmental science.

Licenses/Certifications: 

  • Valid Driver’s License. 
  • WDFW Snorkeling Certification and Training (can be completed within 6 months of hire, renewal expected annually).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Proficient with using iPads.
  • Proficient at creating and entering data into iFormBuilder forms.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.  

Experience in: 

  • Port sampling, and lake or river creel surveys. 
  • Leading or supervising a crew.
  • Working with recreational anglers and guides.
  • Creating, organizing, and querying Access and Excel databases. 

Knowledge of: 

  • Salmonid species present in the watersheds, their spawning behavior and general life histories and fishery management methods.
  • North Coast area waters.
  • Quillayute and Hoh rivers’ fishing access area.
