Picture yourself performing and leading journey-level work in the design, construction, repair, and maintenance of structures and related physical facilities.

With your experience, you will provide leadership, adhere to team schedules, coordinate job responsibilities, monitor daily work, and ensure the safety and productivity of the staff at worksites who install/assemble carpentry components and structures.

You are excited to be a key participant in the relationship with the customer(s), acting as a supportive management liaison and customer interface.

Duties

• Assists in the preparation, scheduling, and supervision of the work layout for the maintenance, alteration and repair of building structures and components.
• Communicates the job(s) to and with the crew.
• Determines materials, equipment and manpower needed.
• Reports on worksite production and work progress to the Construction and Maintenance Project Supervisor.
• Oversees the execution of the work, including quality, production, and safety, by ensuring that crews work to job specifications and follows all Agency standards.
• Continuously inspects completed work making sure it is up to code and specifications and initiates timely problem resolutions.

Fabrication: 

• Sets up and welds such items as piping manifolds and metal stairways. Weld and makes repairs to various metal structures.
• Cuts pipe, plate, and equipment when necessary.
• Operates a variety of fabrication shop equipment such as oxyacetylene and arc welders, hand or electric pipe threaders, grinding wheels, buffers, and drill presses.

Carpentry:

• Assess a variety of residential, commercial and safety structures for physical or structural defects. Makes needed repairs to safety and integrity where needed.
• Constructs small to medium scale structures, such as handrails, decks, roofed covers, and buildings.
• Repairs or alter buildings, sheds, concrete forms, and other structures.

Concrete Forming and Finishing: 

• Sets the forms that hold concrete to the desired or corresponding specified dimensions.
• Installs and ties rebar, expansion joints, water stops, embeds, chamfers and molds.
• Spread, level and smooth concrete using rake, shovel, hand or power trowel, screeds, and various floats.

Plumbing:

• Installs, disassembles, and replaces a multitude of domestic and production plumbing components such as pipes, valves, gates, couplers, manifolds, etc.
• Inspects supply lines, fixtures, and valves to determine cause of failures and recommends actions for maintenance and repair.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Work Setting, including hazards:
  • Duties are performed at construction sites on hatchery and wildlife areas and on occasion in a fabrication shop.
  • Hazards include working on rough terrain, riverbanks, slippery slopes, and other surfaces, confined and difficult to reach spaces, and working and driving in all types of weather conditions, including extreme heat, rain, or snow.
  • Bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, pushing, pulling, and lifting of 50 pounds repetitively when loading and unloading trucks or moving materials around project site.
  • Some tasks will involve sitting or standing at a desk and working on a computer. Office hazards include working under fluorescent light, repetitively entering data into computer, looking at computer monitors for long periods of time, sitting or standing for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.
• Schedule:
  • Generally, 6:00 am – 4:30 pm, Monday – Thursday.
  • Overtime as needed/requested. This may include overnight stays, and evening and weekend work.
• Travel Requirements:
  • Travel required 50-70% of the time, depending on season.
• Tools and Equipment:
  • Computers, basic hand tools, power tools such as drills, roto hammers, cut off saws, circular saws, hydraulic punch, metal band saws, welders, cutting torch, plasma cutter, chainsaws, gas powered tools and equipment such as plate compactors, trash pumps and concrete saws, and powered motors; automotive, mechanical equipment, and trailers.
• Customer Interactions:
  • Frequent interactions varying between Federal, Local, Inter-Agency, and Intra-Agency customers and vendors.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Four (4) years working experience in welding/fabrication.

And

• One (1) or more of the following:
  • Two (2) years of experience in plumbing, general construction, carpentry, concrete, or a similarly related field.
  • Two (2) years of experience in the construction or building trades.
  • Two (2) years’ experience using hand and power tools with reasonable degree of skill, work safely, performing work from oral and written instructions without direct supervision and perform heavy manual tasks.
  • Two (2) years’ experience reading and working from blueprints, plans, and sketches; estimating materials and time needed to complete jobs.

License:

• Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.

Knowledge of:

• Common methods, practices and materials used in repairing buildings, mechanical equipment, and building facilities; use and care of tools.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Forklift Operation Certification.
• Valid First Aid and CPR Certification.
• Heavy equipment operation of small-scale machines such as mini excavators.
• Knowledge of State and Agency policies, procedures, and guidelines.
• High-density polyethylene (HDPE) fusion certification.
