How to be Successful in the Role: Gain familiarity with Conservation Futures program, codes and processes.  Get to know board, committee, sponsors.  Learn about past and current conservation projects and align the program with important local, region, county or statewide improvement targets for a variety of species.  You will also have the opportunity to use your knowledge and experience to develop best reporting practices for broad understanding of program performance.  You may be requested to assist with some department real estate projects.

Core Daily Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and manage the Conservation Futures program. 
  • Work with communities, park districts, sponsors to identify conservation properties, assist with application scoping, set up review process for oversight board and work with Council to adopt priority lists. 
  • Ensure appropriate documentation, budgeting, distribution of funds and monitoring of properties.
  • Work with other county departments, cities and partner organizations to develop program improvements to achieve conservation goals for the county.  

Core Strategic Responsibilities:

  • Develop conservation plans and coordinate with local partners to ensure long term viability of open space, resource lands and habitat for future generations.

About the Department
Pierce County Parks and Recreation manages over 5,200 acres of open space, trails, developed and undeveloped parks.  We provide recreational programs and infrastructure in active and passive parks and trails. The department consists of three divisions:  Parks and Recreation, Administration and Resource Stewardship. Nature of the work
The Conservation Futures Coordinator (Planner 2) position in the Resource Stewardship Division is responsible for coordination of the Conservation Futures grant program in partnership with other county departments, local cities and other park districts and non-profit land conservancies.  Work includes developing and facilitating citizen advisory groups, reviewing conservation easements, developing stewardship plans, identifying properties for conservation and monitoring/reporting program progress. As the program coordinator, you will be integral to the property transactions process for developing open spaces, and conserving resource lands and habitats throughout Pierce County including within cities.

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental planning, conservation biology, resource management, ecology, physical geography or related field; and,
  • Two years of related planning work OR any equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Positions in specific program areas may require program-related experience, education, and/or training.
  • Experience in local, county, or state planning is desired.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS AND/OR QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Successful completion of all required background checks may be required prior to employment.
  • Must possess a valid Washington State Driver’s license, or the ability to obtain the license within 30 days of employment, or otherwise meet the travel requirements of the position.
