Summary of Position: The Conservation Assistant will help further ICL’s conservation campaigns, primarily supporting efforts to improve and protect air and water quality, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and promote sustainable communities in Idaho. Initially, this position will primarily engage with government agency permitting and regulatory processes; ideally, over time, it will grow to more actively address legacy mining contamination, actively promote energy efficiency, and more. The Conservation Assistant will engage in local, regional and statewide environmental issues through professional advocacy and by empowering ICL’s members, volunteers and the public to become involved in bringing about positive local and statewide environmental change. This full-time, exempt position is based in the Sandpoint office, requires a flexible schedule with occasional evening and weekend responsibilities, and is likely to include increasing regional and statewide travel over time.
Key Responsibilities:
Under the direction of senior ICL program staff, the Conservation Assistant will primarily be reviewing and submitting written comments on air, water and other permits to ensure they comply with the law, include best practices, and seek the highest protections available. As they gain experience, we anticipate this employee will not only submit written comments, but also represent ICL at state-based administrative rule-makings, in regional working groups seeking to restore and enhance North Idaho water bodies, and at regional utilities to further ICL’s goal of a carbon neutral Idaho. The ideal candidate for this entry level position will be knowledgeable of or have a background in science, engineering or other related discipline.
Duties/Objectives:
Monitor state and federal regulatory and rule-making processes to ensure ICL is abreast of new actions, permits and opportunities
Review and comment on state and federal air, water and other permits
Seek opportunities to further ICL climate goals with regional utilities, so they adopt and implement policies and programs encouraging energy efficiency and clean energy development
Work with partners to restore and enhance North Idaho water bodies
Work in collaboration with fellow staff in support of other ICL campaigns
The ideal candidate will have/will be:

Interest, motivation and excitement about working on conservation advocacy
Background in science, engineering or other related disciplines
Understand how to actively represent conservation values and achieve conservation outcomes in a variety of settings
Willing to learn or have familiarity with public regulatory and rule-making processes, and how to engage with them
Experience preparing, or able to quickly learn to draft, professional comments on permits and proposals, and develop other work products that are based on the best available science and regulatory compliance
Have or been able to build relationships with partner organizations, indigenous communities, agency administrators, and ICL supporters
Strong written communication skills
Solid computer skills, including MS Excel and Word, and G Suite
Intellectually curious and a strategic thinker
An effective communicator who works well with others
Able to work both independently and collaboratively
Committed to applying their skills toward protecting our environment
Willingness to live in or near Sandpoint, Idaho
