Want to join something GREAT and make a difference?
The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has an exciting opportunity. The Recreation and Conservation Division supports public use and conservation on over three million acres of DNR-managed lands, through implementing DNR’s Recreation, Natural Areas, Natural Heritage, and Conservation Acquisitions programs. The Natural Areas Program, funded by over $10 million, manages ~ 169,000 acres of conservation lands, including 97 Natural Resource Conservation Areas (NRCAs) and Natural Area Preserves (NAPs), to protect and restore native ecosystems, while allowing for a reduced level of public access in NRCAs. The Division is also home to the Natural Heritage Program, the State’s expert on rare species and rare/high-quality ecological communities, housing over 7,000 records of species and ecosystem-specific data, providing consultation to planners and landowners across all ownerships to inform land use decisions. The division is responsible, through the Conservation Acquisitions program, for transacting $100M+ million in conservation easements and acquisitions, all funded through Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Section 6, National Coastal Wetland acquisition grants, U.S. Forest Service (USFS) Forest Legacy projects, and legislative capital and operating dollars.

This program applies the fundamental principles of DNR’s Natural Areas Program to complete land acquisitions that protect high-quality native ecosystems, geologic features, archaeological resources, and scenic attributes within State Natural Areas.
