The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has an exciting opportunity with our Community Resilience Program (CRP).  We are recruiting for a Community Resilience Coordinator (CRC).  This position reports to the Assistant Division Manager (ADM) for Community Resilience to strengthen the ability of communities to protect against fire and provide for public and firefighter safety in wildfire response. This position in a geographic area implements community-level wildfire preparedness, mitigation, and prevention activities, including but not limited to the implementation of DNR’s Wildfire Ready Neighbors Program (WRN), Community Wildfire Prevention Plans (CWPP), National Hazard Mitigation Plan (NHMP) participation and coordination at the county level.

 

Duties

Responsibilities:

  • Independently assessing structures and private lands for wildfire risk.
  • Building a strong and positive rapport with homeowners, landowners, Community Leaders, Conservation Districts, Firewise USA® sites, fire districts, and the general public.
  • Positively represent the agency when interacting with the public.
  • Implement the WRN program and assist partners in implementing WRN programs.
  • Using GIS technologies to collect and analyze data.
  • Assist and administer grants.

 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: 

  • An associate’s degree in a natural resource field, education, community engagement, or related field and 2 years of experience in community engagement, education, disaster recovery, fire ecology, or related field and building partnerships and coordinating projects with various stakeholders.
    OR An equivalent combination of education and experience in the above-related fields.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering and supporting an environment that honors diversity, equity, inclusion, and environmental justice practices.
  • Perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with applicable laws and regulations, and public records retention requests are followed.
  • Experience presenting and delivering presentations, workshops, and educational programs, particularly those centered around resilience, public safety, wildfire preparedness, and risk reduction.
  • Experience and knowledge regarding wildland fire prevention and suppression techniques.
  • Ability to use a variety of different software for the position, including Microsoft Office, Adobe, ArcMap, SharePoint, and more.
  • Demonstrated good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience working with the media.

Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment:
  • Approximately 50% of work is conducted indoors at regional offices or work centers (depending on work location), public events, and meeting room settings. Occasional lifting of up to 40 pounds can be expected. Incumbent must be able to traverse uneven terrain in all weather conditions while performing field work associated with community and regional resiliency work.
  • Requires approximately 50% of the time in the field traveling between events, meetings, and fires in the region. Occasional overnight travel within the state is required but could be out of state as well.
  • A valid unrestricted driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years. 
Desired Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a natural resource field, education, community engagement, or related field.
  • Knowledge of employment rules, regulations, and union contracts as they apply to permanent employees.
  • Experience protecting property from wildland fire.
  • The desire and ability to be trained to an NWCG “Red Card” qualification with various qualifications/certs.
  • Familiarity with DNR assistance programs, grant opportunities, and community resources for disaster planning.
