Position Purpose

This position leads planning, prioritization, development, implementation, coordination, editing, tracking, and curation of Sustainability in Prisons Project’s (SPP) science and sustainability education materials. The incumbent develops protocols, procedures, and outreach materials to train and inform SPP and Washington State Department of Corrections (corrections) staff, students, and education partners. As part of the SPP leadership team, this position cultivates collaborations with diverse program partners to advance SPP’s mission to bring science and nature into prisons. The position works with an engaged community of incarcerated people, scientists, researchers, technicians, corrections professionals, faculty, staff, and students to provide impactful education and training and resolve complex issues. The incumbent must demonstrate high value for equity and inclusion, empowering change, working across differences to increase access to science and sustainability education, and ability to consistently extend respect and compassion to all partners and stakeholders.

This is a part-time .75 FTE (30 hour per week), overtime-eligible project position at the Olympia campus of The Evergreen State College and within Washington prison facilities. This project position is funded through June 30, 2023 and by a legislative proviso, anticipated to continue through June 2027.

Salary and Benefits: $3,041.25 – $4,089.75 per month of part-time work + excellent benefits including paid sick and vacation leave; paid campus holidays; a generous medical, dental, life, and disability insurance package; and a tuition waiver program.
