Salary- $65,500

Job activities include but are not limited to:

  • Coordinate and Execute Media Strategy – Draft, edit, and pitch stories and content to the media to support chapter priority campaigns, including through press releases and statements, blogs, reports, and other content. Monitor news and social media for narrative development and shaping, and maintain a clip report and media list. In collaboration with staff, volunteer leaders, and national Sierra Club campaigns, ensure Sierra Club messaging on priority campaigns is strategic, effective, and supports our campaign objectives and equity principles.
  • Manage Chapter Social Media – Ensure the Washington State Chapter’s Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts are active and engaging. Explore new media and platforms in the digital space to expand our reach and enhance our visibility and credibility in the environmental movement. Develop shareable content including graphics, videos, images, and social media toolkits to support chapter campaigns.
  • Coordinate and Execute Digital Engagement Strategies – Work with staff and volunteer leaders to set up email campaigns, action alerts, and text campaigns to mobilize grassroots support for priority campaigns and issues. Coordinate the production of the chapter’s monthly e-newsletter to members and supporters by both creating original content, editing articles written by staff and volunteers, and including event notices and interesting articles. Publish and manage content on the chapter’s website.
  • Support Local Volunteer Teams – Support the Washington State Chapter’s local volunteer groups in editing, scheduling, and sending emails and alerts to their members and supporters. Develop content for local volunteer teams to amplify statewide priorities in their communications. Work to enhance volunteer skills and capacity to support local or statewide campaigns, priorities, and outreach.
  • Develop Campaign Materials – As needed, work with the legislative, political, legal, fundraising, and chapter/national teams to produce fact sheets, formal comments, reports, and other types of communications for organizing, lobbying, advocacy, donor stewardship, or other strategic purposes.

The successful candidate must have the following skills and experience:

  • Equity Analysis and Practice. You are aware of your group identities and how they have shaped your life and experiences at work. You have an analysis of how racism and other forms of oppression in society impact relationships, systems and culture. You bring experience and skills for working effectively with colleagues across group identities and position/role.
  • Strong oral and written communications skills. Demonstrated ability to write and edit content across different platforms and audiences and distill complex topics into easily digestible formats, messaging, and media. Exhibits strong interpersonal communication skills to shepherd shared projects through to completion.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with social media engagement strategies. Exhibits knowledge of social media strategies to increase engagement with target audiences. Familiarity with social media analytics and performance metrics. Ability to tailor messaging and voice to different platforms.
  • Project Management Skills. Ability to concurrently manage and coordinate multiple projects, consistently meet deadlines, balance competing demands and make decisions about priorities.
  • Collaborating across teams. Possesses an aptitude for working in a team-oriented setting and ability to effectively communicate with volunteers, staff, and the public.

The strongest candidates will also demonstrate the following experience, skills and competencies:

  • Passion for the environment and familiarity with Washington State Chapter issue areas such as salmon recovery, public lands, transportation, housing, and building electrification.
  • Experience with non-profit, political, or advocacy communications, including a familiarity with environmental advocacy and a working knowledge of how advocates can target agencies and elected officials with digital communications.
  • Excellent media and public relations skills and an ability to communicate well with reporters and editors.
  • Technical proficiency in design software such as Canva, Photoshop, or InDesign and experience creating shareable graphics or designing materials.
  • Proficiency in Drupal and Salesforce Marketing Cloud.
  • Demonstrated success in and enthusiasm for working with volunteers to achieve successful outcomes on shared projects.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary for this position is $65,500.

This position is represented by a collective bargaining unit and is subject to the terms and conditions of the contract between Sierra Club and Progressive Workers Union.
