Description

 

This classification is entry level and responsible for assisting in the site maintenance and operation of County owned or operated wastewater treatment plants, collection systems, drinking water facilities, and water distribution systems to ensure quality operations of wastewater and drinking water systems for the citizens.

 

Examples of Duties

 

  • Regular, reliable, and punctual attendance. 
  • Monitor wastewater plant processes and water system quality.
  • Assist with maintenance and minor repairs on plant equipment, machinery, and systems.
  • Assist in laboratory testing and analysis.
  • Assist with collection system and distribution system responsibilities.
  • Locate and inspect new construction utility hook ups.
  • Respond to customer complaints and questions.
  • Respond to emergency operations concerns.
  • Maintain grounds and buildings.
  • Communicates effectively verbally and in writing.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
Positions in this classification are not responsible for supervision of other employees.

JOB COMPLEXITY:  
This classification requires the incumbent, within six (6) months of hire, to be able to read and interpret the laws, rules and regulations relating to wastewater and drinking water systems; work independently, safely, and efficiently with limited supervision. Work within established policies, procedures, and processes.  
 
SPECIFIC JOB SKILLS:
Incumbents are required to learn and know within six (6) months of hire: the basic components of a wastewater and a potable water system; laws and regulations regarding the operation and maintenance of wastewater collection, conveyance, treatment and disposition, as well as drinking water systems. 
Incumbents are required to develop the ability to: Perform duties accurately and timely; make accurate mathematical calculations; perform accurate laboratory tests and analysis; communicate effectively with the public, other employees and outside professionals;  mentally and physically perform essential functions; work independently within established guidelines with limited supervision; handle multiple, multi-step tasks simultaneously; maintain effective working relationships with other employees in the department, other county departments and regulatory agencies.

 

Minimum Qualifications

(Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities, required to successfully perform the job.)

  • High School Diploma or equivalency &
  • One (1) year of domestic wastewater system and drinking water system operating experience &
  • Experience in monitoring and/or maintenance of mechanical systems.  

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: 
  • Valid WA State Driver’s License, incumbents are required to have and maintain a good driving record while employed by the County.
  • First Aid/CPR Certification 
  • Water Distribution Specialist Certification by the Washington Department of Health Drinking Water Program
This position is required to follow chapter 13 of the Mason County Personnel Policy. If offered the position you must provide a Abstract Driving Record from the WA State DOL


Water Distribution Specialist Certification Requires: High School Diploma or equivalency and six (6) months of experience of working as a water system operator. Certificate is expected to be obtained within one (1) year of hire.
Operator in Training (OIT) will be considered with the expectation of obtaining the Group I Wastewater Certification within one (1) year of hire.
