Collaborative Forestry Field Technician

Timber Marking Crew Positions working in Lassen National Forest

Introduction

Sierra Institute for Community and Environment (Sierra Institute) in collaboration with Lassen National Forest (LNF) are providing a unique opportunity to contribute to forest restoration and timber stand improvement activities within restoration projects on the LNF. Qualified individuals with an interest in active management of forested landscapes for ecosystem resilience are encouraged to apply. The selected applicant will work as part of a six-member crew to mark trees for the management of vegetation on the Lassen National Forest in California. The Crew may be expected to camp in the field while working. Positions are open until filled,
applications will be reviewed starting on March 24th and continue on a rolling basis as they are received.

Crew Positions: 

Crew Leader 

Lead crew(s) in carrying out timber cruising and timber marking according to established protocols. Assist with the development of project schedule. Report out on project activities. Assist Supervisor with inventory/restocking. Tree Designation: Crew leader will be responsible for designating harvest/leave trees following provided marking guidelines, while providing oversight for five crew members. Ability to motivate and supervise a crew is a must. Crew Leader will be expected to exercise sound judgement in designating trees. Crew Leader must be organized, open to learning, and willing to work hard in a physically demanding position. Training for this position will be provided during the first weeks of work under the guidance of professional staff from the LNF.

Crew Member

Tree Designation: Crew members will be responsible for designating harvest/leave trees following provided marking guidelines. Crew members will be expected to exercise sound judgement in designating trees. This is an entry-level position, crew members must be open to learning, and willing to work hard in a physically demanding position. Training for this position will be provided during the first weeks of work under the guidance of professional staff from the LNF.

Crew Apprentice 

The Timber Marking Crew Member Apprentice will serve as a member of a crew performing timber marking activities within the Almanor Ranger District of the LNF. The position will allow the incumbent an opportunity to “learn on the job” alongside an experienced crew to safely perform tree designation and interpretation of silvicultural prescriptions. The Crew Member Apprentice will receive training tree identification, forestry field techniques, and will assist in the completion of tasks as directed by the Crew Leader, including equipment management, tool repair, and maintenance.
