Under the general direction of the Stewardship Program Manager, this position directly supports the agency’s mission and vision by leading, guiding, and promoting climate change and sustainability initiatives statewide.  The position works closely with agency staff to implement the agency’s climate change adaptation plan, mainstream climate change resilience efforts, and ensure the use of sustainable practices that protect the natural environment and reduce the agency’s carbon footprint.  The position assembles the necessary data and prepares reports to ensure agency compliance with climate-and sustainability-related mandates.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Coordinate, refine, and lead implementation of agency climate change adaptation plan.  Ensure appropriate identification and management of risks to agency resources and investments associated with climate change.
  • Collaborate with other agency programs to draft agency climate change adaptation implementation plan and performance measures.
  • Monitor adaptation plan implementation, track progress on performance measures, and provide updates on climate change adaptation to executive leadership and Commission.
  • Identify and lead adaptation projects in the agency in consultation with relevant agency staff and technical experts from other agencies.
  • Lead and/or participate in education and training for staff on climate impacts, adaptation options, and planning tools.
  • Serve as a technical resource for staff needing climate information for specific projects.
  • Collaborate with the Partnership and Planning and Capital programs and the Operations Division to integrate climate change into agency planning efforts, including Classification and Management Plans (CAMP).
  • Provide parks perspective and represent agency in state/regional climate-related initiatives.
  • Ensure agency meets all mandated resource monitoring and reporting required by Statute and executive order.
  • Prepare required annual reports/plans to the departments of Ecology, Commerce, Enterprise Services, and other entities, as needed.
  • Update and implement agency sustainability policy and plan.
  • Provide technical assistance to park staff on green building strategies and energy efficiency.
  • Ensure agency compliance with Executive Order 18-01.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental, physical, or earth sciences, economics, engineering, environmental management, public policy, planning or other fields closely related to climate change adaptation.
  • Three (3) years of relevant professional experience related to climate change adaptation and/or sustainability which includes analyzing technical information and synthesizing findings for decision making.
  • Must be proficient in MS Office Applications (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel).

CRITICAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND PERSPECTIVES:

  • Knowledge of current climate adaptation projects and partners in Washington.
  • Knowledge of laws and policies governing energy efficiency, sustainability, and greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Knowledge of energy efficiency and sustainable construction practices.
  • Knowledge of climate change adaptation and resilience concepts.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • A demonstrated ability to communicate and implement sustainability and climate change resilience plans with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Passion for promoting climate change preparedness across disciplines (environment, stormwater/wastewater, recreation planning, flood management, etc.)
