Want to be a rock star? The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Washington Geological Survey is seeking a Chief Landslide Geologist to lead a talented team mapping landslides and assessing landslide hazards across Washington State. Using a coaching mindset and bringing fresh ideas to the group, you will be responsible for the management and further development of the already awesome Landslide Hazards Program.

Responsibilities:

  • Providing expert guidance on landslide mapping and modeling techniques.
  • Nurturing your team’s professional careers and development.
  • Hire and successfully onboard new team members as needed.
  • Oversee field work with a mind toward safety.
  • Bring new research and innovative techniques for landslide response or remote-sensing map techniques for consideration.
  • Determine the scope and timelines for new projects, and use project management skills to keep them on track and within scope.
  • Provide expert review of the team’s landslide inventory and susceptibility mapping for publication.
  • Forge and maintain relationships with outside stakeholders within county and local governments, universities, state agencies and federal programs in order to widen the Program’s reach, keep others up-to-date on ongoing work, and discover opportunities for collaboration and partnership.
  • Promote the Landslide Hazard Program’s mission and goals through public outreach, media, and presentations.
  • As needed, manage the Program’s landslide emergency response for regional or large landslides and for post-wildfire debris flow assessments.
  • Pursue new funding opportunities for landslide research.
Required Qualifications:
  • At least 7 years of verifiable professional geological experience, which must include some landslide experience, A Master’s degree in geology, geophysics, geological sciences, engineering geology or other closely related degree will substitute for 2 of those years.
  • A Washington State Engineering Geologist License, obtained within three years of hire.
  • Demonstrated experience in successful project management, developing budgets, work plans, and proposals.
  • Ability and experience in performing and leading field investigations in a variety of topographic and environmental settings.
  • Demonstrable skills in data management, GlS, and remote sensing.
  • Documented public speaking and written communication skills.
  • The incumbent in this position is required to travel.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates may be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
Desirable Qualifications:
  • Three years of experience in landslide investigations, hazard assessments, and modeling.
  • Two years of experience in supervision or team lead of staff.
  • Experience in the incident command system and NIMS.
