Alaska Trails is seeking a backcountry Camp Cook & Manager (CCM) who loves working with people and shares our commitment to trail stewardship. The CCM will work alongside and support a trail crew on the South Fork Eagle River (SFER) Trail in Eagle River, Alaska in coordination with Chugach State Park (CSP). The crew will construct new tread, maintain existing trail, complete structure work, add drainage features, utilize power tools, and receive material orders via helicopter while the CCM manages meals and the backcountry camp. The crew will consist of six employees total and will coordinate directly with CSP and project partners.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The main function of this position will be to help receive and coordinate helicopter deliveries with the Crew Leader and project partners, prepare crew meals, clean dishes, source clean drinking water, enforce kitchen/camp hygiene, and manage the backcountry base camp with the Crew Leader. While working closely with the SFER Crew Leader and Alaska Trails management, the CCM may be asked to assist in ordering supplies, participating in trail maintenance and construction, and ensuring completion of the project in a safe and timely manner. The SFER trail crew will be based out of a backcountry camp located at the center of where trail maintenance and construction will take place. The crew will hike from camp to the work site each day, working a four-on, three-day-off schedule. Due to the location and nature of this project, logistics and problem-solving will be a large part of the job.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Project Coordination and Planning
- Oversee the backcountry camp on project sites for the duration of the season
- Plan and prepare for the work including preparation of meals, cookware, water filtration, camp equipment, and other necessities
- Work closely with the Crew Leader, Alaska Trail Stewards (ATS) management, and CSP for planning, preparation, and material needs
- Create and foster a culture of safety and inclusion
- Ensure everyone is using best-practices for backcountry hygiene
- Ensure meals are prepared on time and fit into the daily work schedule set by the Crew Leader
- Prepare balanced meals that meet the crew’s dietary restrictions and caloric needs
- Calmly manage emergency situations following ATS emergency response protocols
- Positively represent Alaska Trails’ mission, programs, and membership in all interactions with volunteers, trail users, and others
- Report all incidents affecting the safety, health, and well-being of crew in a timely manner
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preferred job skills, experience and personal traits:
- Demonstrated experience in the field and backcountry settings
- Experience and desire to work in a remote area of Alaska
- Demonstrated skills in team management
- Basic backcountry cooking skills
- Organizational skills, attention to detail, and technology skills to provide program and administrative support
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and email communication
- Familiarity with database usage is a plus
- Strong interpersonal skills to ensure a fun, safe, and quality camp experience
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills – ability to communicate across multiple channels to internal departments and external partners
- Cultural competency experience and demonstrated ability to work with people of diverse races, ages, genders, abilities, and economic backgrounds
- Ability to work independently and contribute to a team effort
- Ability to remain calm and manage emergency situations
- Ability to work in an outdoor environment and follow minimum impact guidelines
- Demonstrated flexibility in a dynamic and fast-paced environment, feeling comfortable with mid course corrections
- Current WFR and CPR certifications
- Demonstrated knowledge of best-practice backcountry hygiene for people and cookware
- Valid driver’s license and ability to drive a truck with trailer on highways and dirt roads
- Ability to work weekends and 10-hour days
- Ability to work overtime (typically for materials orders and project )
- A strong commitment to Alaska Trails’ mission Compensation: $25 per hour
