Salary– $2,957.00 – $3,821.00 Monthly

Our Bull Trout Stock Assessment Technician, 

  • Collects water samples throughout Olympic Peninsula rivers for eDNA analysis.         
  • Gathers data in rivers via snorkeling to identify, count and/or collect fish, and/or deploy and inspect field gear
  • Conducts on the ground reconnaissance work for eDNA and snorkel surveys. 
  • Conducts tangle netting and hook-line-surveys for bull trout.
  • Uses established procedures to conduct steelhead redd count surveys by accurately recording observed redds and live and dead fish counts within selected stream reaches of Clallam and West Jefferson counties. 
  • Maintains accurate field records.
  • Contacts private landowners, Olympic National Park and Department of Natural Resources for permission to gain access to land. 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

  • Work Setting, including hazards:   
    1. The primary work environment is outdoors and physically demanding and is often done in inclement weather, within varying stream flows and can be strenuous.  The job involves considerable hiking, usually 3-5 miles but can be up to 15 miles on occasion, into remote areas on private and public timberlands.  Walking along streams on slick boulders, wading riffles, or maneuvering watercraft (i.e. raft, hard side drift boat, and pontoon boat) requires moderate strength and agility. Lifting equipment up to and or greater than 40 pounds may be required. Snorkeling in cold, fast flowing, whitewater conditions.  Driving extended periods to remote field sites. Overnight backpacking trips into remote locations may be required.  
  • Schedule:   
    1. Typically works a 40-hour work week Monday – Friday; however this position is considered non-scheduled as work hours may vary due to inclement weather, length of daylight and river conditions. Weekend and evening work may be required.    
  • Travel Requirements: 
    1. Some travel may be required and is typically local or regional to conduct business or attend training.
    2. Overnight backpacking trips into remote locations may be required.
    3. Driving to stream survey locations via state and county roads, as well as local travel along streams on private (logging) roads throughout the district will be conducted using a state vehicle.  
  • Tools and Equipment: 
    1. Duties require the use of standard office furniture and equipment (e.g., desk, filing cabinet, computer, printer, telephone, fax machine, copy machine, etc.). State vehicle, wading shoes, PFD, polarized glasses, wading staff, waders, dry suit, snorkel gear, tangle net, GPS unit, sampling gear, notebooks, backpack, and vests.  Pontoon and drift boats.  Pump and eDNA sampling supplies.
  • Customer Interactions:
    1. Develop and maintain effective relationships with biologists from tribes and other public and private agencies to promote exchange of information.  Frequent contact with constituents (clients); may occasionally deal with conflict when delivering agency information. 

 

Qualifications

 

Please Note: College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six semester or nine quarter hours of natural science classes.

  • Graduation from high school or GED, including one year of high school science AND two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1.

OR

  • Graduation from high school or GED including one year of high school science AND two (2) years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist.

License:

  • Valid driver’s license.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Background in elementary biology and in-the-field salmonid identification. 
  • The ability to complete field data forms accurately and to follow oral and written instructions. 
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to interact with the public are necessary. 
  • Good field observation skills, good handwriting skills for recording field notes, experience with Microsoft Word and Excel computer software programs.
  • Previous experience with salmon and steelhead spawning ground surveys, handling salmonids, and experience with swift water swimming.
