This position:
- Works within a white dominant culture while working to transition to an anti-racist culture
- Coordinates and develops a garden leadership program that centers diversity, equity, and inclusion
- Recruits, trains, and supports volunteer garden and community leaders
- Builds relationships between staff and gardeners to foster trust, support community engagement, and address both community and gardener needs
- Works collaboratively with garden communities to provide education and resources to increase understanding of program expectations and codes of conduct
- Works to ensure the garden communities we are inviting people into are actively working to address systemic racism and program participants are aware of expectations around inclusion
- Monitors garden plots, educates gardeners about program policies and leads process for gardener accountability
- Has hard conversations with individuals who may become emotional and/or hostile
- Develops authentic, reciprocal, trusting community and partner relationships
- Develops and implements outreach plans to fill vacant garden plots with people from historically underserved communities including Black Communities, Indigenous Peoples, people of color, people with limited incomes, immigrants, and refugees
- Develops, tracks, and manages program activities and initiatives

Work Location
Currently, many positions with the City of Portland are being performed remotely due to COVID-19. In the future, current positions classified as “full-time remote” could: 1) remain full-time remote, 2) become a remote/onsite mix, 3) revert to full-time at a city work location. As the situation evolves, the exact work location of the position in this recruitment may change based upon leadership direction and approval.
To Qualify
- Knowledge and experience using practices of organic gardening, food production and community gardening.
- Experience developing and implementing culturally responsive programs using community involvement.
- Knowledge and experience recruiting, training, organizing, and supervising volunteer workers possessing a wide variety of skills from diverse racial, ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Experience communicating program policies and requirements in potentially hostile situations while retaining professional demeanor.
- A valid state driver’s license and an acceptable driving record at the time of appointment.
- First Aid and CPR certification within six months of hire.
