Blue Economy Manager

Location: San Diego, CA

Hours: Full time (with some nights and weekends)

Compensation: Commensurate with experience

Care about oceans and coastal communities and want to make a difference? You will be joining a team of international experts working around the globe to protect the world’s oceans. The Waitt Institute is working with 10+ national and territorial governments to create sustainable ocean plans to help improve local livelihoods and economies while safeguarding marine life and ecosystems. The Waitt Institute is hiring a Blue Economy Manager who is looking to foster ocean-based private sector growth and economic development in developing and developed States and Territories. Reporting to the Blue Economy Director, this position will work with in-house teams as well as with partner governments, the private sector, and academia to develop economic strategies, business plans, and funding pathways.

Responsibilities

  • Supports Blue Economy Director in design and execution of blue economy programs and processes
  • Ensure that the blue economy work is properly coordinated with program teams and partners
  • Conduct analyses, compose reports, and synthesize information in support of blue economy program development and execution
  • Help assess and prioritize blue economic growth and diversification opportunities
  • Assist in the development of business plans capable of generating revenue streams from one or more ocean sectors

Qualifications

Professional Qualifications

  • 5+ years in private sector development, sustainable finance, strengthening value chains or economic diversification – preferably in sustainable or ocean-related industries
  • Experience with online tools for managing remote team-work
  • Experience in helping to create investment opportunities – preferably in developing countries
  • Reliable, responsive, and comfortable working across time zones which often involves “out of hours” team work
  • Master’s degree or equivalent in business, finance, economics, sustainable development or related field

  • High level of organizational skills with the ability to coordinate inter-organizational teams
  • Ability to research topics, analyze data and prepare compelling documents
  • Ability to inspire trust and facilitate with strong interpersonal skills and move from ideas to outcomes
