Panama City, Panama is a fast growing city known for its high rise buildings. The city is also located in a critical location for migratory birds journeying between non-breeding and breeding sites to in South America, the United States, and Canada. Light pollution in the city threatens these migrations by illuminating the night sky.

 

The Bird City Panama Coordinator will spearhead efforts to monitor bird migrations, identify key light pollution sources, facilitate the Global Bird Rescue Initiative, and contribute content to a web page that is part of the Bird City Network. Key work responsibilities will include:

– Conduct focused advocacy and outreach based on light pollution and Bird City

  • Regularly update the project partners on major program matters, including outreach, community engagement, and monitoring efforts
  • Continue current, and create new, partnerships with organizations/individuals that will further the city’s efforts to identify key sources of light pollution
  • Serve as principal spokesperson, working with traditional and social media.
  • Lead development or the program and prepare report
  • Manage volunteers in partnership with Adopta Bosque and Panama Audubon
  • Submit data in a timely manner and review results to inform the goals of reducing light pollution and impacts of light pollution on habitat used by migratory birds
  • Collaborate with the Bird City Network to develop new and improve existing light pollution actions that may be used in Panama City and other participating cities
 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proven excellent communication skills: We seek an excellent communicator, collaborator, bird conservationist, and organizer to lead work that addresses the impacts of light pollution on birds.
  • Completed Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a relevant field that could include communications, international relations, biology, education, or another field that emphasizes collaborations.
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) fluency a bonus.
 

COMPENSATION:
The compensation for the full-time position is $1,000/month, negotiable depending on experience, and includes insurance and legal benefits, such as social security and vacation time. Adopta Bosque, Audubon Panamá, and Environment for the Americas will provide considerable support for the activities of the project and the Project Coordinator. The role will be based in Panama City or its vicinities, ensuring access to partners and the locations where monitoring, education, and other community activities will take place.
