Position Information
The primary responsibility of the Biology Instructor is to provide quality teaching in a full range of community college 100- and 200-level biology courses. Instructors must have a passion for what they teach, and have teaching styles that support student success. Instructors are responsible for following Division and College procedures in support of teaching and learning. This position is available to start as soon as Spring Term 2021.

Salary/Compensation Statement:
Faculty positions are paid based on relevant experience and education in concurrence with Lane’s Contracted, Full-time Faculty Salary Schedule .

Required Education:
Master’s Degree (MA, MS or MAT) in a Biology field, or Master’s in a related field plus 30 quarter hours of upper-division and graduate hours in relevant coursework from a regionally-accredited institution of higher education.

Equivalency:

A minimum of two (2) years full-time equivalent work experience in a biology laboratory and/or field setting may be considered as equivalent to 30 quarter hours of upper-division and graduate hours in biology.

Required Experience:
One (1) year college biology instruction with full responsibility for curriculum and instruction (minimum 15 quarter credits or semester equivalent).
Or
Two (2) years of college teaching experience (could be as a teaching assistant or similar role) with substantial responsibility for day-to-day curriculum and instruction. Candidates must demonstrate currency in their teaching experience.

Teaching experience with community college student populations;
Experience in science education, adopting national biology education standards and assessing implementation and student outcomes;
Experience teaching plant/animal physiology, and cell biology in introductory biology for science non-majors and major’s courses;
Experience coordinating and implementing undergraduate research (UGR) in introductory biology courses.

Position Purpose:
Contracted faculty are professional educators with the primary responsibility of providing instruction and academic student support services respectfully, equitably, and inclusively to a diverse and multicultural student population in alignment with Lane’s Vision, Mission, and Values.

This position performs all of the duties of a full-time college instructor including: instruction of college courses in classroom and online as assigned, curriculum development, course design, outcomes assessment, program review, mentoring students, professional development, participation in discipline leadership, participation in division and college business, and other professional duties as assigned.

Essential Functions:

Instruction
– Provide instruction in the varied learning environments, such as in-person, online, remote with synchronous lectures, and hybrid formats
Incorporate current technology, appropriate software applications, appropriate pedagogies, and best practices in instructional delivery
– Maintain currency in discipline, innovation in teaching pedagogies, and instructional technologies
– Provide students with continuous, timely, and relevant feedback regarding their performance in coursework; including prompt grading of all coursework and assessments
– Confer with students on course materials, coursework, and assessments
– Mentor students
– Evaluate student achievement of clearly identified learning outcomes, consistent with core ability outcomes
– Engage students and encourage retention and persistence

 Student Support Services
– Assist students from diverse backgrounds, disabilities, or other special learning situations to fulfill a wide variety of academic goals
– Assist students in accessing various campus support services, such as academic advising, counseling, tutoring, library services, accessible
resources, et cetera
– Actively support and participate in the development and implementation of cultural competency within the division and college; work to promote the recruitment and retention of a diverse staff and student body
– Engage in meaningful student evaluation of courses
– Collaborate and partner with student support services, including academic advisors, counselors, tutors, and other student services staff
to improve student engagement, persistence, and success

Professional Responsibilities
– Comply with College policies and procedures, including accountability for leave time, timesheet completion, release time, textbook ordering, and related functions
– Participate in faculty performance evaluation processes
– Maintain, post, and participate in teaching schedule, regular meetings, and office hours
– Maintain physical campus presence for instruction and daily needs of students, division, college, and community, as specified in the College –
– Maintain requirements for student records, attendance, grades, outcomes assessment, program review, and/or other documentation
– Active participation and initiative in discipline/division leadership

Curriculum Design, Improvements, and Planning
– Develop and revise course content and materials as needed to maintain curricular currency and consistency with learning outcomes
– Establish and review learning outcomes consistent with core ability outcomes, assess outcomes using appropriate assessment tools, and use assessment results to make improvements at a program and course level, including assessing and enhancing multicultural and diversity frameworks
– Meet accreditation requirements for student learning assessment at the course and program levels
– Incorporate college values into the curriculum and promote a respectful learning environment
– Promote and facilitate awareness in developing multicultural and diversity-based curricula
– Develop all class syllabi and course materials in an accessible form that can be delivered directly to and used by students of varied abilities
– Develop online and classroom presentation and delivery techniques that incorporate learning-centered concepts
– Create a partnership with the library, information, and academic technology resources personnel and ensure that the use of these resources are integrated into the learning process (NWCCU Standard 2.A.8)

– Engage in program review of biology courses for majors and non-majors, in addition to actively supporting other accreditation requirements, strategic directions and values
– Lead and coordinate biology discipline undergraduate research (UGR) and the quality implementation and assessment of general education biology offerings
– Apply scientific teaching principles to implement, revise and develop biology curricula, outcomes and resources to improve student gains; participate in other non-majors and majors-level biology collaborations
– Complete all safety trainings as required by the college
– Provide high-quality instruction in collaboration with other faculty that meets established and revised learning outcomes for students in a range of 100-level and 200-level biology courses
– Coordinate with the bookstore for course materials and Life Science
– Engage with college values and participate in the college strategic directions plan and professional groups

General

Physical Demands/Working Environment:
This position works in varied environments. May be exposed to usual office, industry, education, and commercial working conditions that include noises, interruptions, equipment, telephones, and visitors. This position requires that an employee be able to sit or stand for extended periods of time. May perform cognitive and psychometric work for more than six (6) hours a day. Work may require transporting materials up to twenty-five (25) pounds. Work safely in science laboratory/classrooms and in the field.
