This job requires driving government owned vehicles on primitive forest roads and navigating difficult terrain on foot to access owl sites and locate owls during both day and night. The employee works independently, and must be able to follow an established protocol to determine nest and reproductive status of owls in the field. The employee must demonstrate the highest standards of professionalism, honesty, and integrity as these decisions may have legal ramifications to state or federal agencies or private landowners. All duties must be performed with a high degree of quality, uniformity, and timeliness. The employee must work as a team member and may be required to live and work in close quarters and in isolated settings for extended periods of time. The job often involves working alone in remote forest areas and navigating over mountainous terrain. Orienteering skills, including the use of maps, compass, and handheld GPS units are essential to the collection of data in the field. The work is physically strenuous and involves working and hiking in rain, snow, heat, and on steep, brushy slopes. The employee should be comfortable performing these duties at night, well after dark. The employee will work varying time schedules throughout the season, with work being done during the day, night, and/or early morning.
Requirements
Minimum/Required Qualifications: Two years of college-level courses in Wildlife Ecology or a closely related field and one year of experience related to the area of assignment at the Biological Research Technician 1 level; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience. Previous field experience, including orienteering skills, the use of maps, compass, and handheld GPS units. Ability to participate in strenuous work, involving working and hiking in rain, snow, heat, and on steep, brushy slopes. Ability to comfortably perform duties at night, well after dark. Good night and color vision and average or above hearing. Ability to perform duties with a high degree of quality, uniformity, and timeliness. Ability to work well independently and as a member of a team. Some research locations require the ability to live and work in close quarters and in isolated settings for extended periods of time. This position requires a current, valid driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record; therefore, the incumbent must provide a copy of their driving history for the past 2 years from the issuing state’s Dept. of Motor Vehicles.
Preferred Qualifications: Previous experience working on one of the northern spotted owl demography studies. Experience capturing, and banding/marking spotted owls. A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
