Help the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife fulfill its mission: To protect and enhance Oregon’s fish and wildlife and their habitats for use and enjoyment by present and future generations.

Location:  Based out of La Grande, Oregon. Work conducted will consist of implementing, maintaining and monitoring the Department’s Fish Habitat Improvement Program on private lands within the Grande Ronde and Umatilla subbasin.

Job Description: What you will do:

Maintain and implement fish habitat projects and equipment

Communicate with landowners to assure program activities match up with landowner needs. Perform or arrange maintenance on all field equipment. Plant project areas to prevent soil erosion and/or increase riparian vegetation and stream bank stability. Perform fence and watering gap construction and/or maintenance on private lands. Conduct fish salvage operations during project construction.

Assess fish habitat projects

Collect habitat monitoring transect data in field locations using surveying instruments (e.g., GPS, transits, rods, thermographs, etc.). Enter data into standard computer spreadsheets. Summarize data using standard spreadsheet tools. Conduct inventories of fish, other aquatic organisms and vegetation within project areas.

Assist district fish and/or wildlife biologists

Help with fish/wildlife inventories, sampling, and data collection in the field using a variety of equipment.

Position requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day including most weekends and some night work. Position may be physically demanding.

Requirements/Requested Skills: Minimum qualifications are not established for this position; however, we are seeking applicants with the following related skills and experience and who possess or are in pursuit of a Fisheries or Wildlife Science degree or related degree in biological/ecological sciences. Identifying adult fish species (especially salmonids), collecting and accurately recording field data, conducting habitat surveys, computer skills, electrofishing, equipment and fence maintenance, and customer service . Preference for interviews may be given to candidates with this background.

This position requires an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Safety Education Card for on the job use of quads (Class 1 ATVs) obtained through the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, accessible at the following website: www.rideatvoregon.org/. If the selected applicant does not possess this certification, they must obtain it within six months of hire as a condition of continued employment.
