The department of Biology is looking to hire an hourly Reader/Grader to work with Bio280 (with Professor Peter Ward) during the Autumn 2021 quarter.

This will be deadline-based flexible hourly grading work in Bio280 A New History of Life (at ~$17.50/hour). This position is authorized for up to ~75 hours in total, spread sporadically throughout the quarter. This position can be done in addition to a TAship in a different course. To be eligible for this position, applicants must have student status (either enrolled at UW, or having graduated after finishing coursework in the Summer 2021 quarter).

From Dr Ward:
Bio 280 (A New History of Life) has been taught at the University of Washington either yearly or nearly so for more than a decade. It is a large lecture-driven class, supported by extensive readings in a book of the same name.  The course examines the origin, diversification, and history of the major lineages of life, including microbes to the largest animals.  Because the course, and book were developed while its current faculty member was part of the UWs Astrobiology group, it uses the overall arc and history of diversification and extinction of major clades of life in the context of how like might first appear and then flourish (or not) on any Earth Like planet in the Cosmos, using principles of evolution, geology, and astronomy.  Emphasis is on the more important intervals and episodes over the past 4.6 billion years influencing life.

The course has 3×1-hour lectures per week for ~90 students.  A grader will grade a weekly homework assignment as well as two short quizzes, plus a midterm and a final. The position is expected to require ~5-7 hours per week, and the Reader will not need to attend lectures but should have a strong foundational background in Biology.”

All, or nearly all, of this work will be completed online or remotely.
