I. Job Summary

WM is looking for an outreach specialist to join our award-winning team of waste reduction/recycling educators. Protecting the environment is a core value at WM. Our Public Education and Outreach Team activates this value every day, bringing both passion and expertise to empower our customers to reduce waste and RecycleRight. You will be joining a collaborative team, supportive of learning, growth, and career development.

This position is dedicated to helping Seattle businesses and apartment managers reduce their waste and improve composting and recycling programs through educational assistance.

Each day on the job brings new, dynamic, opportunities. You’ll help businesses start new composting programs, help apartment managers educate residents on proper recycling, table at community events, and give recycling 101 presentations to children and adults of all ages and backgrounds. You will also engage with customers and stakeholders on social media and create educational videos, articles, and reports.

Please note Waste Management is closely following health and safety guidelines due to Covid-19 and has taken measures to protect employee and community safety. Under normal circumstances, this role involves in-person outreach in the field roughly 50% of the time. We are currently prioritizing the health and safety of staff and customers by performing most of our outreach remotely via phone or video call. Limited in-person activities are still required, such as delivering materials to customers, auditing recycling bins, and supporting outdoor collection events. This role is designated as remote within the Seattle area. All office-based work will be done from the employee’s home office/employee’s remote work location.

II. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other minor duties may be assigned. 

  • Identifying, developing, and conducting educational programs for businesses and multifamily complexes including in-person, phone, virtual and email communication
  • Distributing educational brochures, posters, containers, decals and other supplies
  • Conducting site visits and waste audits to determine trash, organics, and recycling service levels and make recommendations for program improvement
  • Conducting on-site training programs and presentations for customers
  • Cultivating community relationships by attending and participating in public events and meetings
  • Writing reports, articles, and social media posts
  • Managing projects, tracking data, and evaluating progress towards outreach goals
  • Occasional weekend and evening event work is required

IV. Qualifications
The requirements listed below are representative of the qualifications necessary to perform the job.

A. Education and Experience

  • Education: Associate’s Degree (accredited) in Environmental Science, Resource Management, Education, Public Administration or a related field, or in lieu of degree, High School Diploma or GED (accredited) and 2 years of relevant work experience.
  • Experience: No previous work experience required (in addition to education requirement).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Four-year college degree or equivalent experience in environmental studies, resource management, education, sales, communications or related field
  • Passion for sustainability, especially waste reduction, recycling, and materials management
  • Fluency in Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese or Korean
  • Ability to think creatively, problem-solve, and work independently
  • One to three years of experience working in outreach, education, resource conservation or sales
  • Knowledge of the recycling industry

B. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations or Other Requirements

  • Valid Driver License and reliable transportation

C. Other Knowledge, Skills or Abilities Required

  • Demonstrated expertise and skills in environmental, sustainability and/or education fields.
  • Adept at understanding meaning of contract language.
  • Cultural competency and ability to work with diverse, multicultural populations
  • Organized and able to implement strategies and plans effectively.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Expert small and large group presentation skills.
  • Strong knowledge of WM products and operations. 
  • Aware and adaptable in communication styles.
  • Able to use influencing skills with community stakeholders, customers and internally within WM.
