Job Summary

Due to the everchanging circumstances of the COVID-19 situation that the city is continuing to address, please be advised that filling this position is dependent on being able to safely do so during this outbreak. Although we have adopted strict safety protocols, the program may be delayed or cancelled if the conditions are not right (e.g. re-opening phase, level of community spread, regulatory, etc.).

Position Summary
Together with another crew lead, this position will organize, direct, and oversee the daily activities of a 10-person teen work crew.

The Well K.E.P.T. Program is a summer youth employment opportunity offered through the Natural Resource Division of the Parks & Community Services Department. The program is designed to provide Bellevue youth with education, job skills, and career development training in the field of park resource management. Work focuses on parkland renovation and maintenance; projects may include forest enhancement, wetland restoration, and trail construction. The Well K.E.P.T. Program combines on-the-job work experience, environmental education, and career development training to instill strong self-esteem, good work habits, and sound environmental ethics.

Assignment Length: 06/09/2021 to 08/27/2021
Hours: 40 hours per week, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensures that the work crew carefully follows established COVID-19 safety protocols (e.g. masking, social distancing, pre-work health screenings, disinfecting, etc.).
  • Assist the Park Ranger with program administration, onboarding and training the youth work crew, and scheduling work projects.
  • Responsible for field supervision of the youth crew.
  • Must posses a strong customer service attitude and high level of interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively with youth.
  • Must be able to work with minimal supervision and to direct and motivate crews independently in the field.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 19 years of age by date of hire.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license by date of hire. Must have and maintain a good driving record according to City standards. Current original drivers abstract required at time of interview.
  • Professional/formal experience supervising and/or mentoring youth is preferred.
  • Experience in environmental restoration techniques, trail construction, and/or forest management in the Pacific Northwest is preferred.
  • Experience using a variety of hand tools is preferred.
  • Completion of at least two years of college (by credits) in Natural Resources or related field is preferred.
  • Candidate must pass criminal background check prior to being hired.
