FULL-TIME/PERMANENT
 ASSISTANT WILDLIFE AREA MANAGER
 FISH & WILDLIFE BIOLOGIST 2 (BIO2)

Wildlife Program – Lands Division
 Creston, Washington – Lincoln County

Guided by the agency’s strategic goals, you will assist in managing wildlife areas like Swanson Lakes, Revere, and Reardan Audubon, working closely with the Wildlife Area Manager to implement program objectives and assignments. 

Your responsibilities will span a range of activities, from monitoring permits and leases to implementing integrated pest management projects and habitat enhancements for fish and wildlife. You’ll also be involved in facility maintenance, construction project monitoring, and conducting scientific studies using predefined methodologies. 

Your expertise will be key in making informed decisions in compliance with laws and regulations, while also providing support for administrative tasks and resource management activities. Duties

 

Our Assistant Wildlife Area Manager, 

Is responsible for monitoring, enhancing, and/or managing habitat on wildlife areas according to wildlife area management plans

  • Plans, performs, and/or assigns habitat maintenance and enhancement activities.
  • Supports and provides technical input for projects.
  • Implements Integrated Pest Management Program (IPM) on wildlife areas, including compliance with applicable laws, label restrictions, and record keeping associated with chemical applications.
  • Participate in interagency projects that contribute to the restoration and conservation of fish and wildlife habitat via wildlife area plans, regulations, and actions.
  • Performs adaptive management on habitat enhancement activities.
  • Operates heavy equipment such as tractors, mini-excavators, and farm implements.
  • Surveys and monitors habitats, and native and invasive plant species.  
  • Recommends best management practices for managing habitat.
  • Submits periodic progress reports outlining the status, findings, plans, and recommendations.

Performs field investigations: 

  • Surveys wildlife areas for priority wildlife species including Columbian sharp-tailed grouse, Greater Sage Grouse and Mule Deer.
  • Compliance monitoring of permits, leases, and agreement provisions.
  • Survey for emerging issues (user conflicts, habitat damage and infrastructure condition, etc.) 
    • Boundary and/or interior fence condition.
    • Postings and notifications regarding invasive species.
    • Public safety.
    • Natural disasters (post-fire, etc.).
  • Follows-up on contractual/project deliverables. 

Supervise Natural Resource Technician 3 within the Swanson Lakes, Revere and Reardan Audubon Wildlife Areas:

  • Plans, assigns, and reviews the work of staff, adjusting assignments and schedules to maintain adequate staffing levels and respond to fluctuating workloads. 
  • Evaluates employee performance and prepares performance evaluations. 
  • Assesses training needs of staff and arranges for or provides instruction. 
  • Reviews applicants’ credentials, conducts interviews, and hires or effectively recommends hiring staff. 
  • Resolves staff issues, disciplines, and recognizes employees, and promotes employee’s career development.

Other Duties:

  • Assumes duties of the Manager in his/her absence. 
  • Assist in the development of grants.
  • Assists in developing wildlife area spending plans and monitors budgets.
  • Prepares routine reporting on wildlife area activities. 
  • Purchases materials, supplies, and equipment. 
  • Responds to public inquiry.
  • Represents WDFW at sportsman’s shows, school programs, wildlife-themed festivals, etc. to provide outreach and education.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    • Fieldwork in wetlands or upland shrubsteppe habitats including, operating tractors, heavy equipment, pickups, ATV’s, UTV’s, towing trailers, herbicide application equipment, irrigation equipment, and water control structure operation.
    •  Transporting equipment or supplies weighing up to 40 pounds for up to 300 feet over uneven terrain.
  • Schedule:
    • Overtime Eligible; Monday – Thursday 6:00am – 4:30pm; at times work may be off-schedule due to seasonal demands, emergencies, and time critical assignments. 
    • Non-scheduled work week and travel with possibility of long irregular hours.
  • Travel Requirements:
    • Daily travel to Wildlife area units in Lincoln and Whitman counties which may require daily round trips of up to 150 miles. 
    • Occasional travel for training or meetings also required. 
    • Possibility of overnight travel. 
  • Tools and Equipment:
    • Personal computer hardware and software (MS/Office/Outlook), GPS and software. 
    • Vehicles (e.g., 4wd pickup, UTV/ATV), heavy equipment (e.g., tractor, excavator, skid steer, trailers), implements (e.g., rock rake, disc, sprayer, mower), and hand power tools (e.g., drill, grinder, saw). 
  • Customer Interactions:
    • Interacts with the public while in the field.  Routine public response via phone and email. 
    • Works with county and other state agency workers occasionally. 
    • Deals with private businesses, large and small, during the purchase of materials, may at times work with enforcement officers, district biologists, and other agency and non-agency personnel.

 

Qualifications

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, or environmental science AND one (1) year of professional experience in fish/wildlife/habitat management or research.

OR 


  • Equivalent education/experience. 

Note: A Master’s degree or Ph.D, degree in the applicable science will substitute for the required experience. Closely related qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-by-year basis.

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • Valid driver’s license

Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:

  • Washington State Pesticide Applicators License – Required within the 6 months of employment.
  • First Aid – Required within the 6 months of employment.
  • ATV and UTV certification – Required within the 6 months of employment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

In addition to those required qualifications, our ideal applicant will also have some or all of the following: 

  • Class A CDL 

Experience with:

  • Monitoring vegetation, wildlife populations and recreational use.
  • Working on management and enhancement of shrubsteppe, riparian, wetland, and shrubsteppe plant communities.
  • Identification of plants to species.
  • Restoration of native plant communities.
  • Operating motor vehicles, ATV’s, UTV’s, herbicide application equipment, and farm and construction equipment.
  • Heavy equipment and farm equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Computers and other communication technology.
  • Protection of cultural resources.
  • ESRI ArcMap (GIS mapping systems) and GPS to gather information and generate maps.
  • Grant writing, technical writing, and public speaking.

Knowledge of:

  • Methods and practices of land management; technical habitat processes; elements of habitat for wildlife and fish; wildlife habitat management techniques.
  • Wildlife habitat relationships.
