Position Summary

Southern Oregon University (SOU) is seeking candidates for a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track, Assistant Professor in Environmental Science & Policy, with a specialization in Ecology.

The successful candidate will teach upper-division courses in the natural sciences related to forest ecology, restoration ecology, climatology, fire ecology, and natural resource management.  The candidate will also contribute to introductory environmental science including courses in both the physical and natural sciences.  The successful candidate may also be able to teach upper-division courses in their field of interest. Proven teaching ability and demonstrable research activity are essential.

Successful candidates will demonstrate a commitment to teaching, student advising, and continued scholarly practice. The candidate should demonstrate competency in environmental sciences broadly with specific interest in forest and restoration ecology, applied climatology, fire ecology, natural resource management, and/or range management. Candidates should show excellent written and verbal communication skills, organizational and management experience, demonstrable applied field research, and capacity for undergraduate research/program advising. Teaching responsibilities may include online courses. Other responsibilities include advising, curriculum development, research, professional affiliations as appropriate, and other responsibilities as assigned. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Ecology, Environmental Sciences, Biology, Landscape Ecology, or related discipline at the time of appointment from an accredited institution.
  • More than one year of teaching in higher education teaching, advising, and mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate students.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with experience teaching and supervising students, including students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated experience with undergraduate research mentoring
  • Ability to teach courses in research methodology and scientific writing
  • Scholarly research experience in forest ecology, restoration ecology, applied climatology, fire ecology, and/or riparian ecology
  • Ability to work well with a highly interdisciplinary team
