Special Note
This is a full-time, overtime-exempt project position on the Olympia Campus of The Evergreen State College. This position is an “at-will” appointment, exempt from Washington State Civil Service rules and the Fair Labor Standards Act overtime requirements. This position is funded for two years from date of hire and may be eligible for extension if funding continues to be available.
Position Purpose
This position supports the mission and purpose of the Center for Climate Action and Sustainability by assisting the Director in strategic planning, evaluation, and budget planning. The position is responsible for coordinating promotion and marketing plans, managing program and events, and overseeing Center operations.
Nature and Scope
The Center for Climate Action and Sustainability is a public service center that facilitates research, teaching, and action on climate change and sustainability at Evergreen and in Washington State. This position reports to the Director of the Center for Climate Action and assists in strategic planning and evaluation, budget management, and promotion and marketing.
Essential Functions
Implement and advance new strategic programs for the Center:
    • Assist Director in developing and implementing strategic plan, including creating priorities and programs, creating a plan for evaluation of plan implementation, identifying partners and building partnerships, and gaining actionable input from Advisory Board.
    • Convene and support quarterly meetings with Advisory Board, including scheduling quarterly meetings, creating meeting agendas, and developing workgroups as needed.
    • Steward supportive partnerships with local and national partners, such as identifying needs and duties for potential internship projects, attending conferences, and facilitating meetings.
    • Support student support efforts, including recruitment of scholarship applicants, internship coordination and evaluation, and building new programs for student support.
    • In absence of Director, act as administrator in charge.

 

 
Develop and implement strategic communication and outreach plans:
  • Lead outreach efforts and marketing of Center programs, including representing the Center at campus and community events, creating promotional materials, coordinating events, and managing social media content.
  • Lead editing and design for Center newsletters and annual reports, including producing stories, gathering input from students and community members, and reporting on the Center’s progress towards goals.
  • Support event planning and coordination, including managing communications for the Center events, workshops, board meetings, and conferences.
  • Support website content development and editing.
 
Manage financial and material resources:
  • Develop, monitor, and track budgets for all programs and expenditures; develop quarterly reports and annual projections; ensure adherence to budget processes; plan purchases needed for office and event operations with final decisions made in collaboration with Director.
  • Support the Center’s fundraising goals, including meetings with potential donors and grantmaking organizations, grant writing, and researching additional fundraising opportunities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to develop marketing strategies and materials, including newsletters, web and social media, and event tabling.
  • Skill in building constructive working relationships with administrators, faculty, staff, and managers at Evergreen, on other campuses, and at other organizations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to exercise sound judgment in communicating with a diverse constituency inclusive of students, faculty, and staff.

  • Excellent skill and ability with online and desktop technology, including the current generation of the Microsoft Suite, Google Drive, online survey, and database programs; ability to quickly learn new technologies.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Two years of experience working in education, climate, environmental policy, sustainability, or related field.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience working on climate, environment, and or sustainability issues, policy, or science.
  • Experience working with frontline communities and climate justice movements.
  • Experience creating print and electronic marketing materials using desktop publishing software, such as Adobe Creative Suite or other software programs.
  • Experience working in a higher education setting.
Conditions of Employment
  • Must provide proof of identity and employment eligibility within three days of beginning work.
  • Prior to an official offer of employment, a Declaration Regarding Sexual Misconduct form must be submitted to the college per RCW 28B.112.080.
