Job Summary
The Advocacy Director is a key leader within OJTA who will advance OJTA’s policy advocacy goals, under the larger umbrella of an Oregon Green New Deal.  The position requires experience in policy advocacy and analysis, the ability to develop a multi-pronged strategy, and a commitment to environmental and climate justice. The ideal Advocacy Director is someone with significant experience with policymaking and strategic policy advocacy campaigns.

Job Responsibilities

Campaign Management: (40%)

  • Lead legislative advocacy strategy for Energy Democracy and other OJTA campaigns

  • Represent OJTA in the capitol

  • Support member orgs to participate in Energy Democracy campaign and other campaigns

  • Support OJTA member orgs legislative priorities

Grassroots Advocacy  (20%)

  • Support member orgs’ grassroots advocacy efforts, such as leadership trainings and providing regular updates to grassroots leaders

  • Work collaboratively with member orgs to ensure that grassroots advocacy efforts align with and contribute to their base-building and leadership development goals

Policy Development, Analysis, and Advocacy (20%)

  •  Collaboratively develop policy analysis and concepts in support of OJTA’s campaigns and strategic priorities, with OJTA member organizations and staff

Development and Communications (10%)

  • Envision and develop project and program concepts for grant proposals, grant reports, and grassroots fundraising efforts

  • Develop strategic communications and messaging to meet campaign and organizational goals

Supervision and Org Development (10%) 

  • Work with staff to set clear goals and objectives and ensure strong work planning

  • Model and create values-driven, collaborative organizational culture

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications (knowledge, skills & abilities)

  • Experience working in coalitions and engaging diverse stakeholders.

  • At least 2 years of policy advocacy or campaign experience

  • Demonstrated commitment to building power for Black, Indigenous, People of Color, and low-income rural communities in Oregon.

  • Writing, presentation, and listening skills to communicate with a wide range of audiences, including coalition partners, community leaders, media, funders, and elected officials

  • Ability to gather information including policy options, best practices, stakeholder positions, and  grant opportunities.

  • Knowledge of participatory policy development

  • Demonstrated initiative, accountability, collaboration, and transparency.

  • Demonstrated multicultural competency

  • Knowledge of climate justice principles, organizing and policies

Physical Demands

  • While this job is currently remote, it will involve occasional driving long distances to do in-person meetings. A driver’s license and vehicle registration is required.

  • This job requires using a computer, telephone and other office equipment as needed to perform duties.

  • The employee is regularly required to sit, talk, or hear; frequently required to use repetitive hand motions, and to stand, walk, reach, bend or lift up to 15 pounds.

LOCATION: This position will require the Advocacy Director to travel throughout the state to build relationships and represent the organization throughout the state of Oregon. During legislative session (approximately 5 months every other year), this position will be required to be present in the Capitol in Salem as many as five days a week, and, on average, three days a week.  During at least the next 5 months, the position will be mostly virtual (but not entirely), so there is some flexibility about location, but within four months, the position will need to be based in Oregon.

COMPENSATION: Salary: $55,000-$60,000, depending on experience. Benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance, 401k plan with matching contribution, generous vacation and sick leave, and paid holidays. OJTA is a fiscally sponsored project of Community Initiatives.
