Schedule: The Recreation and Conservation Office (RCO) is head-quartered in Olympia, WA on the state’s capital campus. RCO will consider candidates that can successfully do this job from another location (in-state) with occasional travel to Olympia for meetings and other functions.

We are looking for:
We are seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Administrative Assistant 4 to join the Governor’s Salmon Recovery Office (GSRO) at the Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office. The GSRO plays a critical role in coordinating salmon and Southern Resident orca recovery efforts across Washington State. In this position, you will provide essential executive-level support to the GSRO director, handling day-to-day activities, meeting coordination, and material preparation. Your responsibilities will also encompass maintaining digital and social media platforms, assisting with website management, fact sheets, and newsletters. Managing contracts and projects, contributing to legislative and policy reports, and coordinating major events like the biennial salmon recovery conference will also be part of your role. Your excellent writing and editing skills will be utilized in crafting publications, letters, meeting minutes, applications, contracts, and other essential documents. The work you will enjoy doing includes:

  • Provide executive support for GSRO director and senior staff in engaging with various stakeholders, including Congressional offices, Governor’s office, agency leadership, tribal leadership, and salmon recovery partners across the state.
  • Lead communication and coordination with Congressional offices to schedule Washington DC lobbying activities involving west coast states.
  • Assist in managing executive correspondence, agency comment letters, and federal appropriation letters in support of salmon and orca recovery efforts.
  • Coordinate policy meetings and correspondence with tribal leadership and organizations statewide.
  • Manage general executive tasks such as calendar, scheduling, correspondence, and travel arrangements for the GSRO director.
  • Oversee development and maintenance of GSRO’s electronic newsletter, website, social media material, and SharePoint site.
  • Manage funded projects related to research, monitoring, management, and restoration, ensuring completion of scopes of work and meeting project deadlines.
  • Provide project and contract management support for salmon and orca projects, including assistance with the biennial salmon recovery conference.
  • Offer general office support, including meeting facilitation and minutes, responding to requests and communications, scanning, mailing, and managing GSRO records.
  • Assist GSRO staff with external scheduling and meetings involving the Salmon Recovery Funding Board and other policy bodies.

What you need to qualify:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent 
  • Four (4) years of progressively responsible office/clerical, secretarial, bookkeeping, accounting, or general administrative work.
  • NoteFormal, relative qualifying education may substitute for the experience requirement on a year for year basis. 

What we desire:

  • Knowledge of basic principles of budget development, legislative process, grant/contract acquisition and administration, public involvement strategies, cultural diversity, and tribal relations. 
  • Strong background in natural resources policy, law, or conservation, preferably in the Pacific Northwest, with preference for direct experience with riparian conservation or closely related issues. 
  • Strong understanding of tribes, tribal treaties, and recent tribal history in Pacific Northwest, with preference for direct working relationships with tribes and tribal governments. 
  • Strategic planning, policy development, risk and/or cost analysis/management, research or systems design, natural resource management principles, interpersonal communication strategies, team building and conflict resolution. 
  • Experience and exposure to concepts, language, behaviors, and biases around diversity, equity, inclusion, and environmental justice, with preference for this experience in the natural resources or salmon recovery realm.
