Position Description

The Environmental Studies Program at Seattle University seeks part-time adjunct faculty to teach Introduction to Geographic Information Systems (EVST 3500/ENSC 3500) (5 credits). Winter Quarter 2022.

Introduction to Geographic Information Systems is a required course for Environmental Studies and Environmental Science undergraduates (a cross-listed class). The class introduces students to the social and environmental questions that can be answered using Geographic Information Systems and how to use the tool to answer those questions. Particular emphasis is placed on applications related to environmental justice, environmental planning, and ecosystem management. Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to: 1) understand how GIS can be applied to resolve environmental management, planning and policy challenges, 2)define key concepts related to spatial data, spatial analysis and data visualization; 3) use GIS software to analyze spatial data and produce clear, informative maps to address a real-world environmental management, planning or policy question. It is expected that this course will be delivered in-person.

Qualifications

The candidate will have demonstrated expertise in the relevant course discipline.  The candidate will at minimum have a M.A or ABD status in Environmental Studies, Environmental Science, Geography, or a related field. The candidate will demonstrate prior success teaching undergraduate students.
