This is an AmeriCorps national service position. It is contingent on funding and open until filled. Engaging children with the natural world has powerful positive impacts. In rural, low-income Grays Harbor County, youth need support to lead active, healthy lives outdoors. We aim to reconnect them to the benefits of nature generations before them had. Grays Harbor NWR proposes to have 1 AmeriCorps member who will recruit 3rd and 4th grade teachers in Grays Harbor County to participate in the Shorebird Education Program. The member will provide 6 classroom lessons and 1 field trip to approximately 500 students; will serve on the Grays Harbor Shorebird Festival planning committee; will manage the Shorebird Festival Poster Contest for 1st-6th graders; and will recruit and train volunteers to assist in all these projects. Grays Harbor National Wildlife Refuge is part of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge Complex. Office space is provided at the Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge, and a government vehicle is provided for transportation to the schools. This position aligns with the school year. Interviews will be held in early summer for a start date at the beginning of the school year.

Member Duties: The Shorebird Education Program directly aligns to the National Wildlife Refuge System mission. The member will recruit 3rd and 4th grade teachers in Grays Harbor County to participate in a series of 6 classroom presentations, a field trip to the refuge, and a 7th presentation after the field trip. The member will handle all scheduling and teach the different lessons. The first presentations will be completed by the end of the calendar year and continue through April. Field trips are April – May during the spring shorebird migration. A follow-up presentation for each class will take place mid-May through the end of the school year. Students will receive a journal at the first presentation. In the journal they are asked to follow-up with the lessons by answering questions, doing drawings, and writing reflections. This tool provides continuity and gives students something to keep. In schools, member will provide guidance, model lessons, and support the teachers in journal activities.
