The Position

Do you love exploring the city, connecting with community, and working with trees? Spend your summer checking in on young trees and educating the public in their care.
 
This position will support Portland Parks & Recreation Urban Forestry’s tree planting programs, including the Yard Tree Giveaway program. In summer, work will include monitoring trees to assess health, planting, and survival. In fall, event preparation for 2021 giveaways will include event organization, registration support, tree delivery, and planting. This position represents the program to the public, works closely with tree recipients, and is responsible for collecting and managing tree data.

Duties will include the following:

  • Collect tree monitoring data on sites throughout Portland using a mobile app, including tree health assessment, identification, and measurement
  • Contact people who have received trees from Urban Forestry. Communication will be done by phone, text, and email to coordinate monitoring visits, answer questions, and register participants.
  • Assist with Yard Tree Giveaway program administration, including logistics, registrations, customer service, volunteer training, and problem solving
  • Assist with tree loading and delivery, event staging, and tree planting
  • Manage data and inspection records in Excel and ArcGIS
  • Provide support for urban forestry programs, including permit data entry, field data collection, or other duties as needed

This position will work regularly outdoors in all weather conditions; requires long periods of driving; standing and walking over uneven terrain; and lifting and carrying of items up to 30 pounds. Valid driver’s license required.

  • Experience connecting with Black, Indigenous, or communities of color in Portland
  • Proficiency in a language other than English
  • Basic knowledge of tree identification and biology
  • Experience collecting and maintaining data, especially with mobile devices
  • Experience with ArcGIS and Excel
Work Schedule
Dates: Position start date is June 15, 2021 and runs 4-5 months

Schedule may reduce to part-time or as needed from mid-September to mid-November

Hours: Monday – Friday ; 7:00 am – 3:30 pm (occasional evenings or Saturdays)
Location: 10910 N Denver Ave. Portland, OR 97217

Compensation
Pay rate is $17.50/hour.

About Urban Forestry:

Portland Parks & Recreation Urban Forestry’s mission is to manage and ensure Portland’s urban forest infrastructure for current and future generations. Our urban forest consists of over 220,000 street trees, 1.2 million park trees, and innumerable private property trees. Urban Forestry is involved in managing or regulating all of these trees to differing degrees- creating and implementing the city’s Urban Forest Management Plan, fostering community tree awareness and stewardship, developing tree policies and programs, monitoring and assessing the urban forest, issuing permits for planting, pruning, and removal of all public and some private trees, and responding to tree emergencies.

Work Location

Currently, many positions with the City of Portland are being performed remotely due to COVID-19. In the future, current positions classified as “full-time remote” could: 1) remain full-time remote, 2) become a remote/onsite mix, 3) revert to full-time at a city work location. As the situation evolves, the exact work location of the position in this recruitment may change based upon leadership direction and approval.

To Qualify

The following minimum qualifications are required for this position: 

  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record
  • Must be at least 18 years of age

The following are desired qualifications in addition to the listed above for this position:

  1. Experience with customer service and communication with a diversity of audiences
  2. Knowledge & experience working with trees and tree identification
  3. Experience in collecting and/or managing data
