Data and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Internship Positions – Spring
2023 (3 positions)


Job Title: Data & Geographic Informations Systems (GIS) Intern

Internship Period: February 1, 2023 – April 28, 2023
Compensation: $12/hour, 10 hours per week
Location: These positions are expected to be 100% remote, but may include in person
collaboration or field work depending on location and area of interest. The positions
will work with staff in the Pennsylvania, Ohio or California offices.


FracTracker interns have the opportunity to harness the power of maps and data to
advance grassroots environmental justice campaigns throughout the United States. For

FracTracker internships are geared towards current undergraduate and graduate
students. Recent college and graduate school graduates are also welcome to apply.
Applicants should enjoy and have an aptitude for working with datasets and visualizing
data. Strong applicants will have an interest in or prior experience in map-making and
analyzing and writing about oil, gas, and petrochemical issues.


The responsibilities of paid interns revolve around the daily work of the other
FracTracker staff, time-sensitive projects, and the interns’ own areas of interests.
Responsibilities will vary, but may include:
● Data mining, cleaning, management, and GIS mapping
● Limited spatial analyses using GIS software
● Translation of data into blog posts
● Communications support, including website development, content creation,
reviewing and processing audio transcripts from interviews and other tasks as
needed
Preferred Skills:
● GIS/mapping; Experience with ArcGIS
● Excellent verbal and written communications skills
● Experience with Google Suite, Excel, and data filing systems (such as Box)
● Citizen science
● Research
● Data management
● Website development; Knowledge of WordPress
● Teamwork and interpersonal skills
● Ability to work independently
● Ability to meet deadlines
● Experience with Google Suite, Microsoft Excel, and data filing systems (such as
Box)
Applicant should:
● Be enrolled in (or a recent graduate of) an accredited college or university is
required. Majors can include geography, environmental science, environmental
studies, public health, or a related field
● Have a deep interest in the mission of FracTracker and issues around the
impacts of oil, gas, and petrochemical development
● Have an understanding of environmental justice and the need to stand in
solidarity with frontline communities
● Have a knowledge of and interest in environmental public health concerns or
other issues of relevance in understanding the impacts of oil and gas extraction
and climate change
